Blender Course Transcript (SRT to
Paragraph)
01 Welcome To The Course
- Hi everyone, thanks so much for joining this course. I'm very excited to have you here.
First of all let's introduce myself. My name is Zacharias Reinhardt but you can simply call
me Zach if you like. I'm the founder and lead instructor here at CG Boost. And I started to
learn 3D in 2004 with Blender and Cinema 4D. Since then I've created a lot of personal
projects but I also worked for roughly seven years as freelance 3D artist and a certified
Blender trainer creating a lot of client projects, animations, renderings and so on. And I also
taught companies, freelancers and individuals on how to use Blender. In 2018, I left my
freelance career behind to fully focus on building up my online business called CG Boost.
And my goal and mission at CG Boost is to help people pursuing their dreams to become a
3D artist and eventually making a living with what they are passionate about. Since 2010 I
put up a YouTube channel, I published countless hours of Blender tutorials in German and
later on in English. And besides of all this 3D stuff, which is also my hobby, I am a family
father, I am married and I have two childrens. And I also love to cook vegetarian and vegan
food. So what will you learn in this course? The goal of this course is to take you from
knowing nothing about Blender 2.8 and 3D in general, to the point where you have a strong
foundation which you can use to create your very own first 3D projects and that you will be
able to take on more advanced topics after watching this course. So 3D is a huge topic and
we won't cover everything here, but we will cover all the important stuff which you need to
get started. In the first chapters we will cover, let's face it, the boring topics. But they are
necessary and in order to make them a little bit more fun to watch, I created a bunch of
small 3D scenes which we will use to explain certain things. And under each lecture you can
also download these scenes to play around with, which I highly recommend. After this we
will get to the more exciting part. From this point we splitted the course into two sections.
The fundamental section and the exercise section. So in the fundamental section you will
learn about workflows, tools, features and other stuff. And in the exercise sectors you will
learn how to use all this knowledge to work on an actual project. We will create this 3D
animated scene from scratch in this course. So these chapters include stuff like modeling,
we will create the car and the environment, then we will color the whole scenes with
materials, we will add lighting, animation, we will use particle effects, and then we will learn
about the rendering. That means how to create images or videos from your animated 3D
scene. For this animated car scene, which we will create in this course, I picked this low poly
style, which basically means that we create objects with very simple surfaces. And this saves
us a lot of time, it's not too complicated to create, but this still looks beautiful. So this art
style is perfect for people starting out to create animations, tell your stories and so on. So
you don't waste your time on learning how to create super realistic stuff, which takes a lot
of time and practice to get right and also it's way more complicated to animate and
everything. For this first iteration of the course I also decided to leave out some of the more
advanced and complicated topics, which are for example, UV mapping, texturing, rigging,
compositing and in general, the effects stuff. Because I wanna focus on the stuff which is
really important to create scenes like you've seen here. After watching the course, you will
have the confidence and knowledge to learn all the other stuff way easier. Blended 2.8
comes with this new exciting realtime render engine called EEVEE. And since EEVEE is
really responsive, we see everything in real time in the 3D view port of Blender. We will use
EEVEE basically for everything in this course but Blender also ships with another render
engine called Cycles. Which is like a photo realistic renderer. So with this engine the image
quality is much better but it also takes way more time to generate these images. But the
good thing is, nearly everything you will learn in this course you can also use for the Cycles
render engine and in the rendering fundamentals chapter we will also take a quick look into
the Cycles render engine. So that you don't miss out any important stuff. Yeah, if you have
any questions along the way you can ask them in the comments section under each video.
And you can also join the Facebook community for our students only. The link to this you
can find below in the video description. And there you can ask questions, share renders, and
give or receive feedback from us or the other students. So don't hesitate to ask if you have
any question, I will personally respond. So to get most out of this course I recommend to
watch each lecture carefully and follow all the exercises. Under each lecture you can find a
download section where you can download all the important Blender files which you can
use to learn and practice with. And if you don't have internet access all the time you can also
download the whole course including all project files in the download section at the end of
this course. For people that are maybe a little bit more advanced, and maybe don't wanna
watch everything, I've marked some of the lessons with a little fire symbol that means that
these are the most important lessons. So if you wanna like, quickly go through the whole
course I at least recommend to watch these lessons. And if you have a hard time
understanding English, we also provide English captions. That means you have to press the
CC button in the video controls and there you can switch to the English captions. And if you
download the course, there are also caption files included. These are these srt files which
basically have the same name as each video file. And if you put both of these files into one
folder and then for example play the videos with the VLC Player, then this will automatically
use the caption file and shows this in the video which is really convenient to use. So guys,
without further words, let's get started and more important, have a lot of fun with this
course.
02 Download Blender
- [Instructor] All right, in order to download Blender go to [Link] and either up here or
here click on this button. So, right now while I'm recording this video, Blender 2.8 is still in
beta. That means the latest stable version is still Blender 2.79b, but when you're watching
this course later it might be that the stable version of Blender 2.8 is already out. Then it
should be listed up here and then it will automatically detect your system. As you can see
over here I'm using a Windows 10 PC and then simply click on this Download button to
download the installer. In my case, since Blender 2.8 is still in beta yet, I click on this button
down here, Try Blender 2.8 Beta. And then I can pick my system up here, in my case
Windows, and then download the beta version over here. In my case Windows 64-bit,
simply click on that and download this Blender zip file. So if you download Blender over
here, this is the installer. That means this is a file which you need to install. You double click
on that, then it will guide you through the installation process. However, if you download
this over here it is a .zip file. That means this is a picked archive and this we need to unpick.
So what you can do is simply right click on here and either you can use the free tool 7-zip
and extract this or simply click on Extract All. So this is German here, basically it asks me
where I wanna extract this folder. Simply click on this button over here to choose a file path
and then click on Extract. So now I extracted the zip file. I have this second folder here. If I
click into this you can see we have a bunch of files and here we find the [Link]. If I
double click on this, Blender starts. So with this zip file you downloaded, you don't even
need to install Blender. That means if in a few days you wanna have the latest version of
Blender all you need to do is go back to [Link] and simply download this again, extract
the zip file, and simply start the [Link]. And by the way, you can also have 10 different
Blender versions downloaded in this way and run them at the same time. And in general
when you're using Windows, if I double click on this [Link] again, as you can see I can
start Blender multiple times, basically as much as I like, and then I can do these funny
things. For example, I Control + C, copy an object over here and Control + V, paste it over
here. So this one here is a complete different Blend file than over here and then over here.
So you can have multiple instances of Blender open. I'm not quite sure if this is possible on
Mac. As far as I know, it's at least not that simple as on Windows machines. All right, now
when you have Blender on your machine let's get started. (whooshing) (musical flourish)
03 Download Blender Shortcut Pdf
- [Zach] So if you don't know Blender already, then you will learn in this course that there
are a lot of useful shortcuts which you can press to make your editing process much faster.
And since there are so many shortcuts to remember, and I know it's hard to remember them
all, we have created this Blender Hotkey Sheet for you guys, which includes all the
important shortcuts for Blender 2.8, and even a comparison to Blender 2.79. Down here we
have a table of content, and the cool thing here, this is a clickable menu. So for example, if
you wanna learn more about the navigation shortcuts, click on navigation, and then
immediately this will take you to the page with the navigation shortcuts. Then over here on
the left side we can see the function in Blender 2.8, then the shortcuts in Blender 2.8, and
over here we can see if this is still the same shortcut as in Blender 2.79, if the shortcut has
changed, or as you can see down here, if the shortcut is not available and is doing something
completely different in Blender 2.79. So, but if you're just working with Blender 2.8, only the
left column is important for you. Then if you wanna go back to the menu, click on back to
content overview, and you are back. One quick additional note here, if you are searching for
a specific shortcut, what you can do is press control + F. Certainly if this function works
depends on what kind of PDF reader you are using, but I think in most cases this should
work. And then you have the search bar up here, and simply enter what you are looking for.
For example, duplicate, and then you can see this is entry one of two, and if I click on next,
then you can see the other one. And in this case I quickly can find what I'm looking for. And
you can download this PDF in the downloads section below, and there's also a gray scale
version of this document which is a bit more friendly to print. So I would recommend if you
are going through this course, print this out, put it on your table, and then you have a
perfect companion for this course.
04 Blender User Interface Changes
- [Zach] So on the date this course here releases Blender 2.8 is still in beta as you can see
over here. That means the whole course was recorded in Blender 2.8 Beta and not only in
one beta version, I constantly updated my Blender versions, so the whole course was
recorded in different beta versions, to the point where the developers announced that they
won't make any changes to the user interface anymore until the stable version of Blender
2.8 will be released. And in general this was not a big deal that I used different versions,
they only made a bunch of small adjustments to the user interface here and there. Most of
them I already addressed in the lectures where it is important, but here I wanna summarize
some of the smaller changes which are very important because in some lessons the user
interface might look a bit different. So if you don't find the thing I'm showing in the video,
which probably won't happen at all, but if so, come back to this video, and check where to
find it. (vertical lines swishing) So there are basically three things that I wanna show you.
First of all, the biggest difference you will notice from the latest version I have here, and
some of the versions I used in this course, is that we have a big top bar thing up here, which
we don't have here right now. And, in order to enable this, you simply click here on View,
and click on Tool Settings. And then you can see this top bar, or these tool settings appear,
similar as in many lectures of this course. And you will also notice that some icons have
changed here and there, but in general they are still in the same place, so it shouldn't be a
problem at all. And by the way, these tool settings up here are not really necessary. It can be
quite useful if I full screen the 3D view, for example, to have it up here, but, we can find the
same settings also over here in the Properties editor, under this icon here. You can see these
are the same settings we have over here. And we can find the same settings if I click on this
button here, this little arrow here under Tool. And these are the same settings as you can
see. So basically you find the same options in three different places. So, depending on what
you like most, you can either enable the tool settings up here, open up the side bar, or
simply enable the tool settings over here. (vertical lines swishing) And, another thing which
I think is one of the most important things, over here, we have a bunch of symbols which
you will learn more about later, and you can see here we only see this eye symbol, but in
some of my videos here we have other symbols as well, and they are now disabled by
default, and in order to enable them, you simply click on this filter symbol up here, and then
here, under this Restriction Toggles you can enable all of these buttons, and then you have
everything here what we need. So, in our case we only need the cursor, the eye, and the
camera over here. So, these three buttons we will see in most of my videos. (vertical lines
swishing) So, and the last thing I wanna show you here, is, if I click on Edit, Preferences,
here we can change a bunch of settings. We will get to these preferences in a later video. The
only thing I wanna show you here is, in earlier versions of Blender 2.8 Beta, and also in
Blender 2.79, when we did some changes over here, we had to save the user preferences
manually. But now in Blender 2.8, it will save everything you do automatically. That means
if you uncheck something here, or check this, or change anything, this will be saved
automatically, that means you don't need to do anything else. Also, after closing and
reopening Blender this will be saved. If you don't like this autosave however then you can
click down here and disable Auto-Save Preferences and then you can Save Current State
manually. So, if you don't know what all this means, no problem at all, later on when you
come to the point in the course you will probably remember, and in most videos where it is
important I also added separate parts where I show you if something has changed. (logo
whooshes) (circle blasts) (bright instrumental jingling)
