Chevening Scholarship Supporting Statement – Asiya Akbar

I am Asiya Akbar, a dedicated agricultural science graduate from The Islamia University of
Bahawalpur, with a CGPA of 3.75/4. With a solid academic foundation, practical research
experience, and a deep commitment to addressing the climate and environmental challenges
facing Pakistan and the wider world, I am applying for the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to
pursue further education in the UK.

My academic and professional journey is rooted in the understanding that climate change, soil
degradation, and water scarcity are among the most urgent threats to food security, biodiversity,
and sustainable development in Pakistan. During my undergraduate studies, I specialized in
agricultural sciences with a keen focus on sustainable soil and water management. I later
worked extensively at the Soil and Water Testing Laboratory in Bahawalpur, where I participated
in critical projects involving soil fertility analysis, irrigation water quality assessment, and
nutrient management. These hands-on experiences allowed me to understand the real-time
environmental challenges faced by rural farming communities and the importance of data-
driven decision-making.

In addition to my practical experience, I have published four research papers in peer-reviewed

journals on topics related to soil health, water conservation techniques, and the impacts of
climate change on crop productivity. This research experience has equipped me with strong
analytical and scientific writing skills, and it reflects my commitment to contributing meaningful
knowledge to the environmental science field.

To further strengthen my expertise and amplify my impact, I am applying to three master's

programs in the UK: the MSc Climate Change at Birkbeck, University of London; MSc Applied
Wildlife Conservation at the University of Bristol; and MSc Water and Environmental Engineering
at Brunel University London. These programs align perfectly with my long-term vision of
becoming a leader in environmental policy and sustainable resource management in Pakistan.
Studying in the UK, known for its academic excellence and innovative research in environmental
science, will empower me to gain advanced technical knowledge, global perspectives, and
policy insight necessary to develop practical solutions to environmental issues in my home
country.

I believe the Chevening Scholarship is more than just financial support; it is a platform to
connect with global leaders, share diverse perspectives, and collectively address global
environmental crises. I aim to bring back the skills and insights gained through this opportunity
to lead climate-smart agriculture initiatives, promote sustainable water use, and advocate for
biodiversity conservation in Pakistan. By integrating scientific research with grassroots
implementation, I aspire to contribute significantly to national and international sustainability
goals.
