Opr Seq. No. 70 Department Drilling
Description During normal rig floor operations, with handling tools in good condition, slips act as a
perfect wedge to grip the pipe without damage and to transmit the string weight radially through the bushings and bowls.
Slips used incorrectly or with worn equipment can cause considerable damage to the slips, pipe and bowls. Care must be exercised when
operating
slips.
[Link] string must be stopped completely before setting the slips. If the string is in motion when the slips are set, the pipe can stretch and
bounce causing
the slips to be thrown out of the rotary table or causing deformation in the pipe below the slips.
2
[Link] not set slips on pipe larger than the slip size. This will not only damage the pipe but also will crack the slip bodies and possibly drop
pieces down
hole.
[Link] should be taken that slips are never set on the pipe up-set area or the zip-groove up-set area on collars. This causes damage to the slip
bodies as
well as the pipe.
The illustrations on the following page "gripping pipe" demonstrate the damage areas that can result from the miss-use of slips
Opr Seq. No. 80 Department Drilling
Description CLEANING AND LUBRICATION:
Clean the inside taper of the insert bowls of any abrasive materials. Lubricate the outside portion of the bowls or master bushing and the inside
taper of the bowls to prevent the slips from sticking in the bowls.
Opr Seq. No. 90 Department Drilling
Description DRESSING SLIPS AND BOWLS:
The slip back and insert bowl ID should be dressed as well as cleaned to prevent sticking of the slips. Abrasives in the mud, as well as rotation
of the
slips, can cause horizontal wear lines on the mating surfaces.
Dress both of these surfaces using emery cloth in an up and down motion. This will result in the grain of both mating parts to be in same
direction and will
greatly reduce friction.

Description On completion of the maintenance, make an unscheduled work order and send it to PMS Office.
