Tutorial-2

1. Verify that each of the following has a root on the interval (0,1). Next perform the bisection method
to determine p3 , the third approximation to the location of the root, and to determine (a4 , b4 ), the next
enclosing interval.

(i) ln(1+x)−cos x = 0 (ii)x5 +2x−1 = 0 (iii)e−x −x = 0 (iv) x−cos x = 0

2. Use Bisection method to find solution accurate to within 10−2 for the function f (x) = 2 sin x − 4 − 1 on
the interval [-5,-3].

3. Use the Bisection method to determine the number of iterations required to solve f (x) = x3 + 4x2 − 10
with accuracy 10−3 . Take a1 = 1 and b1 = 2.

4. Let f (x) = x2 − 6 and let p0 = 3 and √ p1 = 2. Find p3 by using (i) Secant method and (ii) Bisection
method. Which of (i) or (ii) is closer to 6 ?

5. Let f (x) = −x3 − cos x with p0 = −1 and p1 = 0, and p3 by using (i) Secant method and (ii) Bisection
method.

6. How many iterations of bisection will be required to attain an accuracy of 10−4 if the starting interval is
[a,b].
