THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

1.1 Project Context

Obscenity and profanity have become significant issues that schools must get a handle
on. All other forms of inappropriate language are highly discouraged, to deal with this problem
the researchers aim to develop an Arduino-based Profanity Detection and Alert System. The goal
of this study is to reduce the use of profanities inside classrooms.

Children's everyday language is becoming more and more filled with profanity, which is
probably a reflection of how frequently they encounter it in the media and in adults' casual
conversation, students use foul language for a number of reasons: (1)Students swear in an effort
to get their teacher's or peers' attention, (2)to impress their peers, (3)they swear to convey intense
feelings like rage, worry, or annoyance and some intend to harm everyone who has done harm to
them. Thus, this presents the negative impact of the usage of profanities and it must get handled
on specially towards students (Shore, n.d.).

According to Republic Act no.10627 SEC. 2. Acts of Bullying. – For purposes of this
Act, “bullying” shall refer to any severe or repeated use by one or more students of a written,
verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed
at another student that has the effect of actually causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of
physical or emotional harm or damage to his property; creating a hostile environment at school
for the other student; infringing on the rights of the other student at school; or materially and
substantially disrupting the education process or the orderly operation of a school.
The most known reason for this study is the swearing expression and negative emotions,
mainly anger and frustration. Among most incidents everyday stressors such as making mistakes,
frustrating day, and pressure of nearing deadline these stressors caused an emotional release in a
form of immediate expression of feelings through the use of swear words, Physical pain may also
be a cause for someone to swear, and other reasons for swearing includes gaining attention,
showing familiarity, increasing intimacy and etc. (Journal of Managerial Psychology, 2017).
In addition, this study briefly discussed psychosocial factors that may contribute to
person's swearing behavior, which results in a relief of stress or pain. Swearing can have a
variety of interpersonal consequences, including promoting group bonding and solidarity,
inhibiting aggression, eliciting humor, and causing emotional pain to others. (Vingerhoets et al.,
2013).
The use of certain offensive emotionally charged expressions that are discouraged in a
particular language or culture is commonly known as swearing. Thus, having a significant risk of
offending someone, it can be defined as the use of words that may be offensive, inappropriate,
objectionable, or unacceptable in any given social context. Emotion and swearing are closely
related, both cathartic and expressive. It is frequently driven by affective issues, and is perceived
to contain psychological influence by speakers, and effects of swearing differ from those of
ordinary language use, therefore, swearing is powerful. It produces a variety of distinctive
effects, including pain-relieving, cognitive, emotional, physiological, interactional, and rhetorical
(Stapleton, 2022).

After various research through the development of an Arduino-Based Profanity Detector


and Alert System, this proves to be efficient tool for identifying inappropriate language in
various forms of content inside classrooms. The system demonstrates accuracy in detecting
profanity across different languages. Thus, the combination of machine learning algorithms and
natural language enhances its adaptability and efficiency, making it a robust solution in maintain
positive and respectful learning environment.

In this project, the researchers will conduct an evaluation and development in the
effectiveness of the Arduino-Based Profanity Detector and Alert System in reducing the usage of
profanities in schools. The process of the development of the product will be documented,
focusing on its practicality, usefulness, and effectiveness in its application. This study will assess
the effectiveness and usefulness of the product in developing a healthy and positive environment
in schools by reducing the profanity usage.

In the figure shown above, the researchers acquired the necessary materials to be use,
ones each part are completed will then be assembled. Firstly, the electrical components are
connected and soldered, afterwards the Arduino Board and electrical components will then be
placed inside the wooden case.
1.3 Purpose and Description

The purpose of this project is to develop an Arduino Based system as an ancillary


profanity detector and alert system.

The aim of this project is to assess the effectiveness in improving a positive learning
environment of students by reducing the negative advantage of profanities and its impact. In
addition, this project is used as proficient tool to assess students’ choice of words and carefully
enhance overall learning experience.
Listed below are the specific purpose of the study:

 The students can maintain and experience a positive learning environment.


 The aim of the study will inform the teachers when students use inappropriate languages,
allow them to address it easily.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

a. General Objective

The main objective of this project is to provide an accurate and proficient tool in reducing
the use of inappropriate languages by developing an Arduino Base Profanity Detector and Alert
System.

b. Specific Objectives

 To develop a profanity detector and alert system to that can detect the voice of
swear words accurately.
 Assess the implementations of profanity detection in wide range areas.
 Accumulating a device to identify inappropriate languages in various forms of
content.
 Improve the learning experience of students by reducing the advantages of
negative impact in the use of profanity.
1.5 Scope and Delimitation

1.5.1 Scope of the Study

The focus of this research project is to develop and implement a system that can detect
and alert profanity using an Arduino board. The study will take place at Kabasalan Science and
Technology High School during the 2023-2024 school year and will involve surveys with
students and faculty assess the effectiveness of the system. Due to time constraints the device is
only programmed to detect the following words: (1) Gago, (2) Yawa, (3) Busit, (4) Pisti, (5)
Putang-Ina, (6)Tang-Ina, (7) Inamo, (8) Fuck you.

1.5.2 Delimitation
The propose project delimitation, the development and assessment of profanity detector
and alert system is limited and its effectiveness in improvising the learning environment and by
reducing the negative impact of profanity on students. The study does not explore broader
societal implication of profanities, rather focused on creating a device that can detect profanities
in real time only. Due to time constraints the research project was unable to be implemented.

1.6 Significance of the study

This study can help maintain a focused and respectful classroom atmosphere, enhancing
the overall learning experience for all students. This can also allow them to address the issue
quickly and efficiently.
The research study is conducted to benefit the following:

 Department of Education (DepEd). This study can help the Department of Education
by reducing the use of profanities in schools resulting, in a respectful learning
environment.
 Students. This study can help the students by maintaining a positive learning
environment.
 Teachers. The result of this study will inform them when students use inappropriate
language by monitoring and recognizing it.
 Future Researchers. This may serve as useful information and basis for the future
researchers as a study
 Parents. This study can benefit the parents, they will not be needing to monitor their use
of inappropriate languages.

1.7 Definition of Terms

 Alert. To warn (someone) of a danger, threat, or problem, typically with intention of


having it avoided or dealt with.
 Arduino. Is an open-source electronics platform based on easy to software and hardware.
 Arduino IDE. An open-source IDE that allows users to write code and upload it to any
Arduino board
 Arduino UNO. Is an open-source microcontroller board based on the Microchip
ATmega328P microcontroller developed by Arduino.cc.
 Buzzer. It is a basic audio device that generates a sound from an incoming electrical
signal.
 Detection. Is the action or process of identifying the presence of something.
 Profanity. A blasphemous or obscene language.
 Voice Recognition Module V3. It is a module used for recognizing words that are
programmed.

1.8 Software Requirements

The software requirement used in the development of the product is:

1.8.1 Programming IDE


Arduino IDE- The open-source Arduino Software (IDE) makes it easy to write code and upload
on the board. This software can be used with any Arduino board and other microcontrollers.

1.8.2 Programming Language

C++- This programming language was used in the development of an Arduino-based system that
will run on Arduino. It’s a cross-platform language that can be used to create high-performance
applications. It was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup, as an extension to the C language. C++
allows programmers to have a high level of control over system resources and memory.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

2.1 Advantage of Profanity Usage


Profanity often found in social gathering nowadays. The aims of this study are to
investigate profanity usage by different groups of users, has been used to detect profanity and
hate speech and to quantify the effectiveness of tracking profanity through the use of technology
(Teh et al. ,2018). The most known reason for swearing is to express negative emotions, mainly
anger and frustration among most incidents everyday stressors such as making mistakes,
frustrating day, and pressure of nearing deadline these stressors cause an emotional release in a
form of immediate expression of feelings through the use of swear words (Journal of Managerial
Psychology, 2017).

According to an article of Cindy Sicat, (2017) in Time magazine, about 0.7 percent of
people curse daily. Using bad words has definite advantages and disadvantages. Most of the
time, people swear to release strong emotions, thus alleviating pain for some. Curses that are
expressed as interjections and as a result of exhaustion, anger, frustration, surprise, or even
happiness, and that are only for self-expression may even help the person uttering the words. The
act may ease a negative feeling in a tight and difficult situation, and may serve as an outlet for
tension or sudden surge of emotions.

Languages all over the world contain expressions that are implicitly avoided in polite
conversation, according to Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker. However, people use them
sometimes in the most unexpected situations. There they do their work, intensifying emotion and
eliciting unwanted reactions beyond their listeners’ control (Randy David, 2016).

The school shall maintain discipline inside the school campus as well as outside the
school premises when learners are engaged in activities authorized by the school. The school
head shall have authority, accountability and responsibility for creating an environment within
the school that is conducive to teaching and learning. Teachers shall be deemed persons in
authority when in the discharge of lawful duties and responsibilities, and shall, therefore, be
accorded due respect and protection. Therefore, the school shall impose appropriate and
reasonable disciplinary measures in case of offenses or infractions of good discipline
(Llego,2018).

DepEd has adopted the policy to provide special protection to children who are gravely
threatened or endangered by circumstances which affect their normal development and over
which they have no control, and to assist the concerned agencies in their rehabilitation. Which
accordance to "DepEd Order No. 40, s. 2012", Pursuant to the 1987 Constitution, the State shall
defend the right of children to assistance, including proper care and nutrition, and special
protection from all forms of neglect, abuse, cruelty, exploitation and other conditions prejudicial
to their development (Article XV, Section 3 [2]). The Constitution further provides that all
educational institutions shall inculcate patriotism and nationalism, foster love of humanity,
respect for human rights, appreciation of the role of national heroes in the historical development
of the country, teach the rights and duties of citizenship, strengthen ethical and spiritual values,
develop moral character and personal discipline, encourage critical and creative thinking,
broaden scientific and technological knowledge, and promote vocational efficiency. (Article
XIV, Section 3 [2]).

DepEd recognizes the participatory rights of the child in the formulation and
implementation of policies, and in all proceedings affecting them, whether they be victims or
aggressors, either directly, or through a representative

2.2 Self-operating Profanity Tracker

Profanity detection is often thought to be an easy task. However, past work has shown
that current, list-based systems are performing poorly. They fail to adapt to evolving profane
slang, identify profane terms that have been disguised intentionally or unintentionally
misspelled. For these reasons, they are easy to circumvent and have very poor recall. Secondly,
they are a one-size fits all solution–making assumptions that the definition, use and perceptions
of profane or inappropriate holds across all contexts. This system far surpasses the performance
of list-based profanity detection techniques. The use of crowdsourcing in this task suggests an
opportunity to build profanity detection systems tailored to communities. (Sood et al.,2012)

The Voice Profanity tracking feature is designed to enhance the safety and
professionalism to communicating within individuals. With the Voice Profanity Tracker, these
takes significant steps to ensure a respectful and secure environment for people (LivePerson,
2023).

This study proposes an Internet-of-Things-based (IoT-based) safety barrier warning


system to achieve a safer underground construction site. A focus of this paper is to establish a
hazard energy monitoring system and use IoT to generate early warnings and alarms as
dynamical safety barriers for hazard energy on underground construction sites. To ensure the
performance of the proposed system, the hazard energies and their coupling mechanisms was
analyzed to provide safety barrier strategies and scenarios for avoiding unsafe behaviors and
unsafe status of construction equipment and workers' environment (Zhou and Ding, 2017). The
current study examined the effect of two automated warning system response criteria biases on
system sensitivity under two levels of operator workload. Operator workload was manipulated
by using a unidimensional tracking task of two predetermined levels of subjective workload. The
National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Modified Task Load Index (NASA M-TLX)
was used to determine workload the tracking task. (Mark Andrew Cummings-Hill, n.d.).

2.3 Microphone Sensor

The research aims to know the noise level by using the Arduino Uno as data processing
input from sensors and called as Sound Noise Level (SNL). Noise detection using the sensor is a
condenser microphone, which are assembled so that it can detect the noise, which sounds are
captured by the sensor will turn the tide of sinusoida voice became sine wave energy electricity
(altering sinusoida electric current) that is able to responded to complaints by the Arduino Uno.
(Rajagukguk and Sari, 2018.).
Voice activity detector (VAD) plays a vital role in robust speaker verification, where
energy VAD is most commonly used. Energy VAD works well in noise-free conditions but
deteriorates in noisy conditions. One way to tackle this is to introduce speech enhancement
preprocessing. We study an alternative, likelihood ratio-based VAD that trains speech and
nonspeech models on an utterance-by-utterance basis from mel-frequency cepstral coefficients
(MFCCs). The training labels are obtained from enhanced energy VAD. As the speech and
nonspeech models are re-trained for each utterance, minimum assumptions of the background
noise are made. According to both VAD error analysis and speaker verification results utilizing
state-of-the-art i-vector system, the proposed method outperforms energy VAD variants by a
wide margin. We provide open-source implementation of the method (Kinunnen and Rajan,
2013.)
Current profanity classification models can accurately identify instances of specific
categories, such as hate speech or bad languages trained the classification model on a large
dataset using three different machine learning algorithms to determine which one was best suited
for the task. This way, the trained model is able to find more subtle hateful content that the
“naive” approach might have been undetectable (Noah Öberg,2023).
This study aims to limit the use of profanity, to determine violators inside the classroom.
Most of the time, people swear to release strong emotions, the process of alleviating pain for
some. Using profanity has definite advantages and disadvantages. Profanity are curses that are
expressed as interjections and as the result of exhaustion, anger, frustration, surprises, or even
happiness, and that are only for self-expression. Thus, the act may ease a negative feeling in a
tight and difficult situation, and may serve as an outlet for tensions.

Synthesis

The reviewed studies are divided into two categories. First, it seeks to limit the use of
profanity to determine violators inside the classroom. Second, the voice profanity tracking
feature is designed to enhance the safety and professionalism of communication among
individuals. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine how profanity is used by various user
groups, how technology is used to identify hate speech and profanity, and how successful it is to
track profanity through its use.
CHAPTER III

DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter discussed the parts used to develop the project. It includes the research
design, research environment, data gathering technique, requirement analysis, software
requirements, hardware requirement, and ethical considerations

3.1 Research Design

The researchers used a developmental research design to develop and evaluate the
effectiveness of an Arduino-Based Profanity Detector and Alert System. In order to get accurate
data, increase of knowledge, and to be provided a clear conclusion. Developmental research
design is a systematic study of designing, developing, and evaluating products, instructional
programs, and processes that must meet the criteria of internal consistency and effectiveness
(Ibrahim, 2016). In this study, the researchers designs and tests prototypes of the project by
assessing the effectiveness of the Arduino-based profanity detector and alert system.

In this study, researchers will develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the Arduino-
Based Profanity Detector and Alert System in reducing the usage of profanities inside
classrooms. This study will assess the effectiveness and reliability of the product in developing a
positive learning environment inside classrooms by reducing the profanity usage. The
development of this product is potentially beneficial for the school in processing a healthy and
respectful learning environment for the learners, ensuring that they will not encounter profanities
as frequent as today. The process of the development of the product will be documented,
focusing thoroughly on its practicality, reliability, and effectiveness on its application.

3.2 Research Environment

This research study was conducted in Kabasalan Science and Technology High School
(KSTHS), Barangay. F.L Peña, Zamboanga Sibugay Province. The coding and wiring of the
product were conducted in Grade 10 Galilleo’s classroom at KSTHS. The forming of the model

of the product took place in Barangay Cainglet, Municipality of Kabasalan, in the residence of
Dian Harmony Bayaron one of the researchers, where the needed tools are easily accessible.

3.3 Data Gathering Technique

3.3.1 Pre-Developmental Phase

In accumulating the data, the researcher then acquired the necessary materials use in the
experiment, which are the Arduino Uno, Wire, Active Buzzer, Prototype Expansion, and Lcd,
which are already available in the Arduino Starter kit, bought from an online shop LAFVIN
Store, Voice Recognition Module V3 , bought from Makerlab Electronics an online shop, Toggle
Switch bought form , Rechargeable Battery and Wood which is already available.

3.3.2 Developmental Phase

When the needed materials are acquired, the researchers will then be divided into three
groups which are then assigned with different tasks. The firsts group will begin to construct the
model of the product by cutting the wood in its desired shape and size and then connected to one
another using wood glue. the second group soldered the components that needed soldering, lastly
the third group will start coding the Arduino uno to control the components.

Accordingly, when the assigned task is completed by the researchers, each part will then
be assembled. Firstly, the Arduino Uno will be connected to the wires and components that was
soldered. Afterwards, the Arduino Uno and the electrical components are then placed inside the
model that’s thoroughly constructed and made out of wood.

3.3.3 Post-Developmental Phase

The researchers then tested the product to assess its effectivity in detecting the usage of
profanity and the range of detection of the product.

3.5 Ethical Considerations

In developing and using a Profanity Detector and Alert System model can have practical
applications, it is crucial to address the ethical concerns associated with the dataset use. The data
set may inadvertently introduce biases, which can lead to unfair or discriminatory outcomes.

Representation Bias. One ethical concern is the potential presence of representation bias
in the dataset. Messages collected from face-to-face communication may inadequately represent
the diverse perspectives and linguistic variations of different communities. This lack of
representation can lead to an imbalance dataset, resulting in a model that is less effective for
certain groups or cultures. It is essential for the researchers to carefully the dataset to identify
biases and mitigate their impact on the model’s performance.

Labeling Accuracy and Subjectivity. Ethical consideration revolves around the labeling
process of the dataset. The task of determining whether a student says a swear word is subjective
and open to interpretation. Human annotators may have different cultural, personal, or contextual
bias that can influence their judgements. The researcher took account for these subjective biases
to avoid perpetuating stereotypes or marginalizing specific groups.

Privacy and Data Protection. The dataset may contain personal or sensitive information
that raises privacy concerns. The researchers ensure that appropriate measures are taken to
anonymize and protect the identities of individuals whose messages are included. Respecting
privacy rights and adhering to data protection regulations is vital to maintain the trust of the
individuals whose data is used in conducting the research.
CHAPTER IV
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

To this chapter, it presents the results and discussion of the projects development
towards the effectiveness of an Arduino-Based Profanity Detector and Alert System.

4.1 Introduction

The researchers conducted an evaluation and further development of the project’s product
during series of tests. After the development phase, the researchers then tested the prototype to
assess its effectivity in detecting the usage of profanity and the range of its detection. The chosen
researchers Sophia Ashley Miel was trained to test the product as part of the development and
the accuracy of the testing. Before starting the testing of the prototype, the researchers ensured
appropriate measurements in conducting series of tests to accumulate an accurate data and to be
provided a clear conclusion.

Objective 1: Assess the development a ProfDetech which detects voices of learners that uses
inappropriate languages.

The ProfDetech, profanity detector provides an efficient tool in improvising the elimination of
inappropriate languages inside classrooms.

Objective 2: Accumulating the implementations of profanity detector and alert system in wide
range areas.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the conclusions and the recommendations made as a development
of this project, Arduino-Based Profanity Detector and Alert System for the learners to eliminate
the use of inappropriate languages.

5.1 Conclusion

The implementation of an Arduino-Based Profanity Detector and Alert System will


provide a solution in profanity issues inside classroom. The use of certain obscenity become a
significant problem and delayed process of approaches to address this have been implemented
disrupting the focus of the learners. And also, certain offensive words are highly discouraged in a
particular culture and objectionable in any given social context. So, the researchers developed a
project entitled Arduino-Based Profanity Detector and Alert System. This research aimed to
provide a device that detects students that uses inappropriate languages in various forms to
identify and inform them to address this matter. Additionally, this project is beneficial as a
proficient device in assessing students of their chosen words and further enhance learning
environment. Thus, this the learners to experience a better and respectful classroom atmosphere
to be able to increase the moral values and to promote a peaceful learning environment, to
address certain profanities quickly and more efficient.

The project aimed to adapt the objectives of this project. Firstly, it presented accuracy of
the device in detecting the voices of student that uses inappropriate languages, helping the
teachers in identifying those students that swears often without delays, plus can make the
monitoring easier and accurate. Second, it presented the application of the device that monitors
or evaluate the detector and alert system of profanity is convenient for the learners of its
endurable. Third, it showed the creation of the device that demonstrates accuracy in detecting
profanity across inappropriate languages in real time and eliminate the negative impact of this
obscenities. Fourth, it presented that accumulating and building a Profanity Detector and Alert
System, these significant features will ensure and secure the device that is used as well as a
proficient prototype. Then lastly, the researchers were able to build and develop an applicable
prototype. Additionally, the overall result based on the series testing and evaluation were all
accurate, and the project serves as a proficient tool in assessing a positive learning environment.

5.2 Recommendations

Based on the summary of the evaluation and findings, conclusions, and evaluation of the
project Arduino-Based Profanity Detector and Alert System that have been presented, the
following recommendations are suggested:

 The study should explore broader implications of profanities, that can detect not
in real time only.
 The prototype should have a durable material used for the model that will secure
the device and will last longer.
 The device must be more applicable that will detect wide ranges and places.
 Other literature and studies of this project or similar to this project should be
improvised further.
