Conclusion
The vocational training at CSPTCL, Bhilai, provided me with valuable practical
exposure to the operation and maintenance of electrical substations, specifically
the 220kV and 132kV substations. This training not only strengthened my
theoretical knowledge but also gave me an in-depth understanding of the
various equipment, components, and systems used in high-voltage substations.
• I learned about the functioning and testing of crucial substation
equipment such as Lightning Arresters, Current Transformers, Potential
Transformers, Circuit Breakers, Isolators, Power Transformers,
Distribution Transformers, and their auxiliary protection devices like the
Buchholz Relay, Oil Temperature Indicator, Magnetic Oil Gauge, Relay
System, etc.
• Apart from the major components, I also learned about the types of
conductors (like ACSR, AAC) and various clamps (tension, suspension, PG
clamps) that are used to ensure mechanical and electrical connections. I
understood the importance of maintaining different operational registers
such as logbooks, maintenance registers, and Transformer tripping
records, which are crucial for the efficient and safe functioning of the
substation.
• The training also included the study of Busbar arrangements or schemes
used to manage power flow and provide operational flexibility and
reliability to the grid system. Equally important was the emphasis on
earthing methods and safety measures—like proper earth resistance
values for transformers and equipment—to protect both human life and
costly equipment from electrical faults.
• Additionally, I learned about the Capacitor Bank systems for power factor
improvement and Nitrogen Cooling Systems (NIFTS) used in power
transformers for temperature regulation.
Overall, this training gave me a comprehensive insight into the practical aspects
of power transmission and the critical importance of testing, maintenance,
safety, and system reliability in high-voltage substations. The hands-on
experience I gained will undoubtedly help me in my future studies and career as
an electrical engineer.
