Composition refers to how you arrange and

place design elements on a page. The

spaces between the design, the
arrangement, and the ways in which the
designs interact or crossover with other
elements.

The word composition refers to what

something is made of, and it comes from
the Latin 'componere', meaning "put
together" and its meaning remains close to
this.

• Purposeful arrangement of
elements/building blocks (e.g. images,
shapes, type, placeholders)

• Intuitive notion of composition is

present (in varying degrees) in
everyone of us. People have a similar
perception of harmony, integrity, unity,
etc.

• Your design should tell a story (and

without needing for you to explain it)

• Visually communicate the message

• Create an impact and attract viewers

attention.

• Open composition: the visual flow is

not restricted and the composition can
interact with its surrounding.

• Closed composition is tightly arranged

into a shape, frame or other holding
device.
