Sir

Subject: Unhygienic Condition of Railways

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the
General Manager, Southern Railways, to the prevailing unhygienic conditions of the
Southern Railways.

I regret to inform you that recently, during my travel to Vasco in Vasco Express, I came
across extremely unhygienic conditions inside the train. The coaches were infested with
cockroaches. As we all know, cockroaches carry bacteria that is harmful for humans, as they
contaminate the food. Small children fear such insects, due to which people suffer much
inconvenience during their journeys.

Cockroach-infested coaches is just one of the issues of concern. A co-passenger of mine

found an insect in his food tray provided by the railway pantry. Apart from this, the toilets in
the train were extremely dirty as well.

I would request the authorities to look into the matter at the earliest and make strict rules and
ensure the use of insecticides at regular intervals so as to maintain proper hygiene levels in
the trains. Also proper cleanliness and hygiene practices will reduce the risk of further
infestation.

Thank you

Yours truly
Saran Singh

Article Writing
1.Advancement in the field of technology has not only made our lives easier but has also
replaced some basics like reading books. Our current daily lives revolve around our phones
and computers and television. Gone are the days when reading printed books, was
considered a favourite pass time. Kids these days get access to everything through their
devices. In about 120-150 words, write an article on 'Reading is a dying hobby'. You are
Rekha/Ramesh.

Reading is a dying hobby

By Rekha

Reading is an essential tool for lifelong learning. It has a vital role to play in one's overall
development. Reading enables us to extend our scope of knowledge and experience.

But due to technological development the charm of reading has considerably reduced for
children. They spend so much time glued to the TV and internet that reading a book in a
quiet and peaceful corner of their homes or library has become an archaic idea for most
children. This fast declining interest in reading culture among children is a cause for concern
and challenge to all and we need to take up measures to alleviate this problem.

The desire for reading needs to be inculcated among children from a very young age.
Parents should read out books to their kids from the time when they are little. This way
children learn that reading is fun and not a chore. This will also help to promote their
attention span which is an important skill for a child to concentrate. Developing the habit of
reading in children requires a number of skills that, in most children, has to be formed by
direct and informed instruction provided through const reiteration.

Despite the easy access to knowledge from the internet there are some things that can only
be earned by reading books. We must not let reading be a niche topic that only a few people
indulge in, like gardening. A well-read individual means an informed family, society and a
well informed country at large. We need to encourage reading as part of our daily activity in
order to keep our minds bright and useful.

Science Symposium on Effects of Pollution on Quality of Life

By Amit, Editor, School magazine

Nashik, 7 June, 2024

MMD School, Nashik recently organised a science symposium on the topic, 'Effects of
pollution on quality of life’ on Monday, June 5, 2024. The science symposium was a part of
the Environment Day celebration which was held in the school's newly renovated auditorium.
Students from classes 8th to 12th participated in the symposium. The panel consisted of
several well known environmentalists who were invited to speak to the students on the
pressing issue.

The symposium began with the welcome speech given by the school Principal, followed by a
brief introduction of each speaker on the panel.

Various issues such as ozone layer depletion, greenhouse effect, smog, aggravated
cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses and other ways in which pollution affects the quality
of life, etc. were discussed by the speakers and the students at the open science
symposium.

Students were encouraged to commute by public transports, especially school buses, or

carpool in order to reduce pollution. The students vowed not to burst crackers and
incorporate the three R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, in their day to day life. With
exchange of new ideas on how to reduce pollution and protect the environment, the science
symposium was truly a learning experience for the students of MMD School. The symposium
ended with the vote of thanks speech delivered by school Head Girl, Rupal Singh.
2.As you were travelling by train, you happened to witness an accident at an unmanned level
crossing. As the reporter of a newspaper, write a report on the accident, including details of
the number of people injured and the extent of damage caused.

Gruesome Train-Car Accident Claims Many Lives

By Shewta Vashisht, Staff correspondent

Kerala, 2nd March, 20xx :

A Maruti 800 collided with the Hapa- Tirunelveli Express train at an unmanned level crossing
at Aroor in Kerala today, around 5 p.m.

According to preliminary records, the train was moving at its full pace. The car came out of
nowhere and attempted to cross over to the other side of the track by leaping in front of the
train. In a fraction of a second, the train hit the car, the latter smashed, killing on the spot
those present in the car. Those injured were rushed to hospital where they were declared
brought dead.

On hearing the deafening noise, people from nearby areas rushed to the scene to
commence rescue operations. On enquiring, locals said that the Kochi - Alappuzha stretch
has a string of unmanned level crossing and several accidents have occurred in the same
area in the past.

After today's accident, the State Transport Minister Aryadan Mohammed stressed on the
need to set manned level crossings, at the earliest. The Minister asked railways to provide
adequate compensation to the families of the victims and also extend immediate relief to
them.
