Transformations Explained and Practice

The document outlines the transformations of parent functions through vertical and horizontal translations, reflections, and stretches/shrinks. It provides specific formulas for each transformation and examples of transformed functions. Additionally, it includes practice problems for graphing functions based on given transformations.

Vertical Translation, Reflection, and Stretch/Shrink

New Function – A Transformation of How points on the graph of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) are
the “Parent” Function 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) transformed to become points on the Visual Effect
Note: 0 < 𝑘𝑘, 0 < 𝑎𝑎 new graph
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) + 𝑘𝑘 (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦 + 𝑘𝑘) Translate up by 𝑘𝑘
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) − 𝑘𝑘 (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦 − 𝑘𝑘) Translate down by 𝑘𝑘
−𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ (𝑥𝑥, −𝑦𝑦) Reflect over the 𝑥𝑥-axis
If 1 < 𝑎𝑎, then vertical stretch by a
factor of 𝑎𝑎.
𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎(𝑥𝑥) (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ (𝑥𝑥, 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎)
If 0 < 𝑎𝑎 < 1, then vertical shrink by a
factor of 𝑎𝑎.

Horizontal Translation, Reflection, and Stretch/Shrink

New Function – A Transformation of How points on the graph of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) are
the “Parent” Function 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) transformed to become points on the Visual Effect
Note: 0 < ℎ, 0 < 𝑎𝑎 new graph
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 + ℎ) (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ (𝑥𝑥 − ℎ, 𝑦𝑦) Translate left by ℎ
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 − ℎ) (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ (𝑥𝑥 + ℎ, 𝑦𝑦) Translate right by ℎ
𝑓𝑓(−𝑥𝑥) (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ (−𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) Reflect over the 𝑥𝑥-axis
If 1 < 𝑏𝑏, then horizontal shrink by a
𝑥𝑥 factor of 𝑏𝑏.
𝑓𝑓(𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏) (𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) ↦ , 𝑦𝑦
𝑏𝑏 If 0 < 𝑏𝑏 < 1, then horizontal stretch by
a factor of 𝑏𝑏.

Summary of all possible transformations above:

ℎ(𝑥𝑥 ) = 𝑎𝑎𝑓𝑓𝑏𝑏(𝑥𝑥 − ℎ) + 𝑘𝑘

1. 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = |𝑥𝑥 + 2| − 3 Parent Function: 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = |𝑥𝑥|

2. ℎ(𝑥𝑥) = 2|𝑥𝑥|
1
3. 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥 ) = − |𝑥𝑥 − 2| + 1 Parent Function: 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = |𝑥𝑥|

4. 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥 ) = (𝑥𝑥 + 2)2 − 3

ℎ(𝑥𝑥) = −2(𝑥𝑥 − 1)2 + 1 Parent Function: 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2
Practice:

In the following problems, a parent graph is provided (in some cases, it is graphed for you!). Describe the transformations
from 𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) to 𝒈𝒈(𝒙𝒙). Then use transformations to graph the function 𝒈𝒈(𝒙𝒙).

5. 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = −(2𝑥𝑥 − 6)2 + 4 Parent Function: 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2

6. 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = 3√4 − 𝑥𝑥 + 1 Parent Function: 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = √𝑥𝑥
