Class Objective:
To understand the structure, strategies, and vocabulary required to write a high-scoring IELTS Writing Task 1
response.
Lesson Plan Outline
1. Introduction to Task 1 (10 minutes)
- Academic: Describe visual data (graphs, charts, tables, maps, processes)
- General: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, informal)
- Word count: At least 150 words
- Time: 20 minutes

Academic Writing Task 1 Structure:
IELTS Writing Task 1 Class
- Introduction: Paraphrase the question
- Overview: Summarize the main trends/key features
- Body Paragraph 1: Detail significant data
- Body Paragraph 2: Compare and contrast more data
General Writing Task 1 (Letter Structure):
- Greeting: Dear Sir/Madam OR Dear [Name]
- Opening Purpose Sentence
- Main Paragraphs (2): Expand with details
- Closing Line and Sign-off: Yours sincerely/faithfully
4. Essential Vocabulary
For Describing Trends:
- Increase: rise, climb, go up, grow
- Decrease: fall, drop, decline, plummet
- Stability: remain steady, unchanged
- Comparison: while, whereas, compared to
Letter Writing Vocabulary (General Training):
- Formal: I am writing to inform you, I would appreciate it if
- Informal: How are you doing?, Just wanted to let you know...
5. Practice Activity
IELTS Writing Task 1 Class
Academic Practice:
The graph below shows the number of international students in Australia from 2000 to 2020.
- Write a full report (150+ words). Use the structure learned above.
General Practice:
Write a letter to your landlord about a broken appliance. Include:
1. What the problem is
2. How it affects you
3. What you want them to do
6. Homework / Extension Task
- Academic: Practice 1 bar chart + 1 process diagram
- General: Write one formal and one informal letter
Tips for Band 7-8+
- Dont include your opinion (especially in Academic Task 1)
- Always write an overview (Academic)
- Use a range of grammar structures (passive, complex sentences)
- Avoid repetition use synonyms and paraphrasing
- Practice under exam conditions (20 minutes, no help)
