Topic:- July 24 Uprising: Media Representation and Public Response

Introduction
The July 24 Uprising, a significant event in contemporary history, has attracted considerable
attention in both academic and public discourse. The uprising, which involved widespread
protests and social mobilization, became a focal point for examining the role of media in
shaping public opinion and influencing political outcomes. The event not only sparked
intense debates on governance, human rights, and social justice, but also raised important
questions about how media representation can influence the collective memory of a society
(Benson, 2021). At the heart of these discussions lies the question of how the media, as a
powerful tool of communication, frames such uprisings and the subsequent public response.

Media plays a crucial role in the way political movements and social unrest are presented to
the public, and this representation often impacts public perception, discourse, and, ultimately,
action (Hall, 2015). The July 24 Uprising saw a range of media portrayals, from mainstream
outlets to social media platforms, which reflected differing narratives and interpretations of
the events. These varying representations were not just reflective of the uprising itself but
also highlighted the media’s role in constructing the political realities of the time (Mills &
Buehlmann, 2018). Public response to the uprising, as shaped by these media portrayals,
became an essential element in understanding the broader social and political consequences.

This study aims to examine the media representation of the July 24 Uprising and analyze the
public response that followed. The role of media in influencing the discourse surrounding
political uprisings, particularly in the context of social movements, has been well-
documented (McChesney, 2017), but a more nuanced exploration of how such
representations influence public reactions in the case of the July 24 Uprising remains largely
underexplored. This research will contribute to filling that gap by providing a detailed
analysis of both the media’s role and the subsequent public response, thus broadening our
understanding of the intersection between media and political mobilization.

Despite the widespread coverage of the July 24 Uprising, there is limited research examining
how media representation influenced public perceptions of the event. While much has been
written about the political and social impacts of uprisings, few studies have focused on the
role of media in shaping the public's response to such events. This study seeks to address this

gap by analyzing the media's portrayal of the uprising and the subsequent public response,
offering insights into how media can shape political narratives and influence public opinion
during times of social unrest.

The rationale for this study lies in the growing importance of media in political mobilization
and its potential to influence societal outcomes. Understanding the relationship between
media representation and public response during uprisings like the July 24 Uprising is crucial
for scholars, policymakers, and media practitioners. By examining how media portrayed the
uprising and how these representations shaped public opinion, this study aims to contribute to
a deeper understanding of the media’s role in shaping political realities.

Although there has been substantial research on media representation of political events and
social uprisings, the specific case of the July 24 Uprising has not been extensively studied.
Previous research has largely focused on broader themes of media influence on social
movements and political protests (Gitlin, 1980), but an in-depth study on how media
coverage directly impacted public response to the July 24 Uprising remains lacking. This
research will address this gap by focusing specifically on the role of media representation in
shaping public opinion about the uprising.

The broad objective of this study is to analyze the media representation of the July 24
Uprising and the public response it generated. The specific objectives are:

1. To examine how different media outlets (mainstream and social media) represented the
July 24 Uprising.

2. To assess the impact of media representation on public perception and response to the
uprising.

3. To explore the differences in media portrayal of the uprising and their potential effects on
public opinion.

4. To provide recommendations for media practices in reporting on political unrest and

uprisings.

This study seeks to answer the following research questions:

Q1. How did different media outlets represent the July 24 Uprising?

3|Page
Q2. What impact did media representation have on public perception and response to the
uprising?

Q3. What are the key differences in how mainstream and social media portrayed the event?

Q4. How can the findings of this study inform future media coverage of political uprisings?

This research is significant as it will contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship

between media representation and public response during political uprisings. The findings of
this study will provide valuable insights for scholars, media practitioners, and policymakers
who are concerned with the role of media in shaping public opinion, particularly during times
of social and political unrest. Moreover, this study will expand the existing body of literature
on media and political mobilization by focusing on a specific case study of the July 24
Uprising.
