Error Detection

The document discusses the Data Link Layer in computer networks, focusing on error detection techniques such as parity checking and checksums. It highlights the importance of Error Detection and Correction (EDC) bits and the limitations of error detection reliability. Additionally, it covers LANs, including addressing, Ethernet, switches, and VLANs.

5.2 Error detection, correction
5.3 LANs
▪ Addressing, ARP
▪ Ethernet

▪ VLANS
COMPUTER NETWORKS
Single-bit and burst error
COMPUTER NETWORKS
Error detection

▪ EDC= Error Detection and Correction bits (redundancy)

▪ Data protected by error checking, may include header fields

▪ Error detection is not 100% reliable!

▪ protocol may miss some errors, but rarely
▪ larger EDC field yields better detection and correction
COMPUTER NETWORKS
Parity checking

Single bit parity: Two-dimensional bit parity: (even)

▪ detect single bit errors ▪ detect and correct single bit errors

One-bit even parity

One-bit odd parity

COMPUTER NETWORKS
Internet checksum

Goal: detect “errors” (e.g., flipped bits) in transmitted packet

(note: used at transport layer and IP layer only)
