[CO1, BT: L3 (Apply)] [Max Marks: 50]
Name: Dhruv Raj Singh DATE-14/08/2024
Roll no: 7320
Assignment Questions:
Demonstrate the different types of topologies and types of transmission media by using a
packet tracer tool.
Q1. Design Star Topology using Hub and Switch and demonstrate the behavior of these
topologies in real time simulation Mode. Also Compare Hub and Switch. State Advantages &
Disadvantages of Star Topology. [10 marks]
FOR STAR TOPOLOGY USING HUB FOR STAR TOPOLOGY USING SWITCH
IP CONFIGURATIONS
PING TESTING FOR STAR TOPOLOGY USING HUB
PING TESTING FOR STAR TOPOLOGY USING SWITCH
❖ Hub vs. Switch
Hub:
• Layer: Operates at Layer 1 (Physical).
• Data Transmission: Broadcasts data to all ports.
• Bandwidth: Shared among all devices.
• Intelligence: No data filtering.
• Cost: Cheaper.
Switch:
• Layer: Operates at Layer 2 (Data Link), sometimes Layer 3.
• Data Transmission: Directs data to specific devices.
• Bandwidth: Dedicated bandwidth per device.
• Intelligence: Learns and uses MAC addresses.
• Cost: More expensive.
❖ Star Topology
❖ Advantages of Star Topology
o Easy to manage
o Easy to locate problems (cable/workstations)
o Easier to expand than a bus or ring topology.
o Easy to install and wire.
o Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.
❖ Disadvantages of Star Topology
o Requires more cable length than a linear topology.
o If the hub or concentrator fails, nodes attached are disabled.
o More expensive because of the cost of the concentrators.
Q2 Design Bus Topology using Switch and demonstrate its behavior in real time simulation
Mode. State Advantages & Disadvantages of Bus Topology. [10 marks]
FOR BUS TOPOLOGY USING SWICH
PING TESTING FOR BUS TOPOLOGY USING SWITCH
IP CONFIGURATIONS
BUS TOPOLOGY
❖ Advantages of Bus Topology
o It is Cheap, easy to handle and implement.
o Require less cable
o It is best suited for small networks.
o Easy to expand joining two cables together.
❖ Disadvantages of Bus Topology
o The cable length is limited.
o This network topology can perform well only for a limited number of nodes.
o If main Cable fails then whole network fails.
Q3 Design Ring Topology using Switch and demonstrate its behavior in real time simulation
Mode. State Advantages & Disadvantages of Ring Topology. [10 marks]
FOR RING TOPOLOGY USING SWITCHES
IP CONFIGURATIONS
PING TESTING FOR RING TOPOLOGY USING SWITCHES
❖ RING TOPOLOGY
❖ Advantage of Ring Topology
o Very orderly network where every device has access to the
token and the opportunity to transmit.
o Easier to Mange than a Bus Network
o Good Communication over long distances
o Handles high volume of traffic
❖ Disadvantages of Ring Topology
o The failure of a single node of the network can cause the
entire network to fail.
o The movement or changes made to network nodes affects
the performance of the entire network.
Q4 Design Mesh Topology using Switch and demonstrate its behavior in real time simulation
Mode. State Advantages & Disadvantages of Mesh Topology. [10 marks]
FOR MESH TOPOLOGY USING SWITCHES
PING TESTING FOR MESH TOPOLOGY USING SWITCHES
IP CONFIGURATIONS
❖ MESH TOPOLOGY
❖ Advantage of Mesh Topology
o No traffic problem as there are dedicated links.
o It has multiple links, so if one route is blocked then other
routes can be used for data communication.
o Points to point links make fault identification easy.
❖ Disadvantage of Mesh Topology
o There is mesh of wiring which can be difficult to manage.
o Installation is complex as each node is connected to every
node.
o Cabling cost is high.
Q5 Design Hybrid Topology using Switch and demonstrate its behavior in real time simulation
Mode. [10 marks]
REAL TIME SIMULATION FOR HYBRID TOPOLOGY
PING TESTING FOR HYBRID TOPOLOGY USING SWITCH
