Example 4 Unrestrained beam design
Using the example 2 sheet for restrained beams, design beam B where
top flange is unrestrained by the floor slabs. Simple restraints assumed
at both ends of the beam and at the point where incoming are
connected to it.
No actions between restraints
except a point action from
connected beams at the middle of
beam.
Example 4 Unrestrained beam design
Actions case: Fd
No actions between restraints,
a point action from connected
beams must be accounted.
Permanent actions Variable actions
Screed 1.8 kN/m2 For a typical school: 3kN/m2
Additional:
p.c.c floor units 2.5 kN/m2 Services/ceiling 0.5 kN/m2
Unfixed partitions 1.0 kN/m2

Assume fy = 275 N/mm2
Wpl,x > MEd M0/fy = 772.06 106 1.00 / 275
= 2807490 mm3 = 2807.49 cm3
Use 2807.49 cm3 in section property table then try 610
229 UB 113 as Wpl, x = 3287 cm3
Example 4
Section property of 610 229 UB 113 (converted units)
Depth of section D = 607.3mm
Width of flange B = 228.2mm
Thickness of flange tf = 17.3mm
Second of moment of area Iy = 3434104 mm4
Elastic modulus Wel, x = 2878103 mm3
Plastic modulus Wpl, x = 3287103 mm3
Warping constant Iw = 2991010 mm6 (1dm = 102mm)
Torsional constant It = 112 104 mm4
E =210103, G = 80769 Nmm2
Example 4
Strength classification
Flange thickness tf = 17.3mm < 40 mm and >16mm
then common steel Fe 430 with fy = 265 N/mm2
(as assumed ) from Table 9.4, and 235 f y 0.942
from Table 9.5.
Section classification
From property table c/tf or b/T= 6.6 < 9 = 8.3, hence from
Table 9.5 flange is plastic. Also d/tw=d/t= 48.9 < 72 = 67.8
from Table 9.5, web is plastic. Therefore 610 229 UB 113
is class 1 plastic.
Carry out restrained beam B deign which was given in

Tutorial 4
4.1 Check the section 610 229 UB 125 is suitable for beam B in
example 4.
4.2 Redesign beam B if it is subjected to a point load FEd (366kN) and
UDL (12.55 kN/m) together. Check the section 610 229 UB 125 is
