STEWARDSHIP REPORT FROM THE OFFICE

OF THE EDITOR IN CHIEF FOR THE

2024/2025 LOCAL ORGANIZATION YEAR
PRESENTED BY FAVOUR OMOSHOLA ALLI
FOR THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
(AGM) SLATED TO BE HELD ON THE 30th
OF JULY, 2025, AT HALL 1A, FACULTY OF
SOCIAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS.

PREAMBLE:
The Editorial arm of JCIN UNILAG serves as both the voice and memory of the
organization, documenting key moments, spotlighting impactful stories, and shaping how we
are perceived both within and outside our community. As the bridge between information and
influence, the team plays a crucial role in ensuring that the work we do is not only seen, but
also remembered.

This report captures the significant contributions of the Editorial Team during the STEP
administration, highlighting our activities, the challenges we faced, the progress we made,
and the lessons learned along the way.
INTRODUCTION
With great pride and gratitude, I, Favour Omoshola Alli, present this report serving as the
Editor-in-Chief for the 2024/2025 Local Organization Year, under the leadership of Isaac
Temitope Ajenifuja. This report offers a comprehensive overview of the editorial team's
activities, achievements, challenges, and key recommendations for future growth.

My role involves leading and managing all editorial content and production for JCIN
UNILAG’s communication platforms. I supervise the creation, editing, and publishing of
newsletters, articles, blog posts, and magazines, ensuring that all content reflects the
organization’s values and maintains high editorial standards. My responsibilities also include
managing the entire content workflow, from idea generation to final publication. I also cover
overseeing magazine production, coordinating content creation, design, layout, and printing
while ensuring deadlines and budgets are met.

ACHIEVEMENTS
During my tenure as the Editor-in-Chief of JCIN UNILAG, we made the following
significant achievements:

● Introduced a consistent biweekly newsletter, keeping our members and Alumni

informed about events happening within the organization, and thereby increasing
engagement by providing members with regular updates, inspiring stories, and
relevant opportunities, keeping JCIN UNILAG top of mind.
● Promoted major JCIN UNILAG projects on the newsletter and the campus
publication, UNILAG Sun. These projects include the Educate a Child Project,
Matriculation Awareness, and the JCIN UNILAG Week. Also promoted external
events, partnerships, and conferences on the newsletter.
● We secured features on several news platforms for major projects i.e. JCIN UNILAG
Week and the Educate a Child project, including the campus publication expanding
these projects visibility beyond the organization. This positioned JCIN UNILAG as a
socially responsible body, enhancing the organization's public image and outreach
efforts.
● Organized training sessions for editorial members building capacity within the team,
and enlightening them on their roles and responsibilities. This initiative also
empowered members with essential editorial skills, e.g. content writing.
● Increased the newsletter subscribers from 178 to 766 by consistent newsletter
publishing, sharing contents across JCIN UNILAG social media platforms and
groups, and collaborating with Brands and communications and Membership
and growth.
● Shared 22 stories, highlighting the activities, and pertinent information related to
JCIN UNILAG.
● The highest number of views we had was 520
● The highest open rate is 51%.
● Currently working on the second edition of the Inspire Magazine
● Introduced the opportunities section in the newsletter, curating scholarships and
Internship opportunities for members every month.
● Submitted a total of 7 newsletter articles to the National Editorials, and 3 to the
Southwest Editorials.

●
CHALLENGES

● Meeting deadlines especially when the directorate lacked team members was
really tasking.
● Lack of resources like Data subscription, at times
● Slow substack email subscription growth
Lessons Learned
● Introducing an Editorial Assistant Role to ensure continuity and reduce
pressure on the Editor-in-Chief, especially in times of tight schedules or
unforeseen circumstances,This person would serve as a reliable support
system helping with managing the newsletter in the absence of the Editor.
● Placing a stronger emphasis on growth content such as spotlight features,
value-driven tips, and shareable quotes can significantly boost readership and
shares.
● Share Newsletters on Social Media to drive engagement. Not everyone
checks their emails regularly, but most of our audience is active on social
media. Repurposing the newsletter into teasers or carousel posts with key
stories can redirect followers to subscribe, revisit newsletters, and stay
informed about the organization’s activities.
● An Editorial Team structure should be established including writers,
proofreaders, and designers to make the team more efficient as a unit.
● Intending members should be encouraged to subscribe to our newsletters.
Not only can this keep them informed and engaged during the induction
process, but it can also serve as a reminder in their inbox in case they fall out
during the process.
● Since both teams handle JCIN UNILAG’s external communications, closer
and more seamless collaboration between the Brands and Comms and
Editorial teams is essential. Working together on planning, content sharing,
and scheduling ensures consistency in messaging, tone, and visual identity
across all channels. Regular joint meetings or shared content calendars can
help bridge communication gaps and create a more unified external presence.

Conclusion
Serving as the Editor-in-Chief for the 2024/2025 Local Organization year has been
an incredible journey, one that stretched me, taught me, and transformed me. From
managing the newsletter to leading a dynamic team, this role pushed me beyond my
comfort zone and strengthened my writing, leadership, and communication skills.

This report is more than just a summary of our activities, it is a reflection of growth,
collaboration, and impact. It represents the collective effort of a passionate and
hardworking editorial team who consistently showed up, poured in their creativity,
and helped bring our vision to life.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire Editorial Team for their
dedication, flexibility, and unwavering support. Each one of you brought something
special to the table, and our wins this year are truly a shared achievement. To the LO
leadership, thank you for your support and encouragement throughout the year. Your
belief in the editorial arm made our work smoother and more impactful.

A special thank you goes to my Vice President, Favour Michael, whose guidance,
feedback, and steady support played a key role in our success. Your leadership
created a space where we could thrive, and I am deeply grateful. To our members,
thank you all for your trust, and encouragement. Your support made it easier to carry
out our duties and push boundaries with confidence. We are especially grateful for
the opportunities you created for the team to shine.

As I sign off, I’m confident that the foundation we’ve laid will continue to flourish
taking the editorial arm, and JCIN UNILAG as a whole, to even greater heights in the
years to come. Thank you for the privilege to serve.
