🧠 Permutation and Combination

Permutation and Combination are fundamental concepts in counting and probability that help in
determining the number of ways to arrange or select items.

🔢 1. Factorial (n!)
📘 Definition
The product of all positive integers up to n.

🧮 Formula
✅ Example
5!=5×4×3×2×1=120

🔁 2. Permutations
Permutations are arrangements of objects in a specific order.

🧩 Case A: All Objects are Different

Formula:

Example:
How many ways can you arrange 3 out of 5 different books?

🧩 Case B: Some Objects are Identical 2

Formula:

Where p, q,… are frequencies of repeating items.

Example:
How many unique arrangements of the word “BANANA”?
Letters = 6; A appears 3 times, N appears 2 times

🧩 Case C: Permutations with Repetition Allowed

Formula:

Example:
How many 3-digit numbers can be formed using digits 1, 2, 3, 4 if repetition is allowed?

🧩 Case D: Circular Permutations

Formula:

● For n objects: (n−1)!(n - 1)!

● If clockwise and anticlockwise same:

Example:
In how many ways can 5 people sit around a round table?

Clockwise and anticlockwise same:

🔃 3. Combinations
📘 Definition
Combinations are selections of items without considering the order.

🧮 Formula
✅ Example 1
How many ways can 2 students be chosen from a group of 4?

✅ Example 2
How many ways to choose 3 cards from a standard deck of 52?

🔄 4. Differences – Permutation vs Combination 4

💡 5. Special Examples and Tricks

🎯 Example 1: Forming Numbers with Digits
How many 3-digit numbers can be formed using 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 without repeating digits?

🎯 Example 2: Committee Formation

From 6 men and 5 women, how many ways can a committee of 3 men and 2 women be formed?

🎯 Example 3: At Least One Condition

How many ways to choose 3 students from 5 boys and 3 girls such that at least one girl is
selected?

Tips for Solving Problems
● Identify if order matters (Permutation) or not (Combination).
● Use factorial notation and simplify before calculating.
● For problems involving identical items, use the permutation with identical objects formula.
● For circular arrangements, remember to use (n−1)!
● Practice problems involving both concepts to strengthen understanding.
