(denotation and connotation). Understanding
denotation and connotation will help you to know the
quality or manner of the words you are writing or
reading. As you go on with this lesson, you will also
understand clearly that the words you write or speak
will have a great impact to one’s emotion, either
positive or in negative way.
Vocabulary Builder
tooth enamel - the hard, outer surface layer of the
teeth that serves to protect against tooth decay.
COVID-19 - an infectious disease caused by a new
corona virus. Co stands for corona, Vi for virus and D
for disease.
startled - a feeling or expression that shows sudden
shock, alarm, surprise or fear of danger
deceitful - deceiving or misleading others;

venom - a poisonous substance secreted by animals such

meaning of a word. The meaning is specific, exact and
concrete.
Connotation refers to the ideas and feelings associated with
the word. It goes beyond the literal meaning of the word. It
denotes the personal and cultural meaning of a word. The
meaning can be positive or negative.
