question, then in the case of an angle it should be given to the nearest degree, and in other cases
it should be given correct to 2 significant figures.

Section A (40 marks)

Answer All questions in this section.

1) (a) The first term of an arithmetic progression (AP) is 5 and the 12th term is 41.
i.) Find the common difference. [2]
ii.) Calculate the sum of the first 20 terms. [2]
iii.) The 20th term of this AP is equal to the 15th term of a geometric
progression (GP) whose first term is 2 and common ratio r.
Find the value of r. [3]
(b) The first three terms of a geometric progression (GP) are 𝑎, 𝑎𝑟, 𝑎𝑟 2 .
The sum of these three terms is 26, and the sum to infinity of the GP is 27.
i.) Find the values of the first term 𝑎 and the common ratio 𝑟. [3]

4) A conical tank is standing with its vertex downwards. The height of the tank is 4 m and the
radius of the top is 2 m. It is initially full of water. The water leaks through a small hole at
the bottom of the tank.

ii.) Show that the farmer’s expenses will first exceed his income in the 24th year. [5]

10) (a) The region shown is bounded by the curve 𝑦 = √𝑥 + 2, the line 𝑦 = 𝑥, and the x-axis.
