My scuba diving experience
by Shona Williams
Last summer, I tried diving for the first time. I don’t mean diving from a board into a swimming
pool, which I loved doing as a kid, but scuba diving, where you swim underwater in the sea with
special breathing equipment. I knew there’d be lots of water sports to try when my friends and I
booked the holiday, and I fancied having another go at windsurfing and kayaking, which I’d done
before. I’d seen scuba diving advertised in other resorts I’d been to, but it was only when my
friends suggested trying it that I considered it.
Our first lesson was in a classroom at the dive centre. I think my friends were disappointed we
didn’t go in the practice pool, but we soon understood what a huge amount we had to know. Our
instructor talked to us about the equipment, what it did and how to use it, and handed us
instruction books. These explained everything about diving, and were full of facts, quizzes and
diagrams, which we were told to read in our own time. There were hand signals to remember,
too, which are essential for underwater communication and we spent a while practising those.
The second lesson took place in a swimming pool, which I was happy about because it felt safe and
familiar. We did a few different activities, such as holding our noses and pushing the air out of our
ears, which you have to be able to do in deep water. That wasn’t as much of a challenge as I’d
expected, though my mates seemed to find it hard. We swam about slowly, getting used to
breathing with the equipment. With all the practice we did, I felt confident I’d know how to do
everything again next lesson.
Eventually, the time came for our first proper dive. As we went under the water, I immediately
noticed what a different kind of world I was in. It was fantastic. I’d expected to see lots of
brightly coloured fish as my body floated through the water, but most of them were dull colours
because we weren’t in a tropical sea. I saw a dolphin, though, swimming through the water.
Learning to dive was a brilliant experience and I can’t wait to do it again!
1 What does Shona say about diving in the first paragraph?

D She had seen people doing it previously.

3 During the session in the pool, Shona felt
A worried about not remembering what she was taught.
B curious about how well her friends were getting on.
C pleased that she had a high level of fitness.
D surprised by how easily she could do one exercise.

A Excited by the unusual environment.
B Amazed by the wide variety of sea life she saw.
C Delighted by the way her body felt in the water.
D Amused by the behaviour of one particular creature.
5 How would Shona describe her experience to a friend back home?
A Being in deep water was a very strange experience and there wasn’t really anything to see
down there.
B I had never realised how similar diving into a swimming pool and diving in the sea were
before.
C I’m glad I decided to give scuba diving a go instead of the other activities I’d intended to
spend time on.
D It was pretty difficult acquiring the skills I needed for breathing underwater, but it was
worth all the hard work.

Questions 1–5
Five sentences have been removed from the text below. For each question, choose the correct answer.
There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.
Around the world in 80 days?
In 1873, a novel was published called Around the World in Eighty Days. In the story, a man named Phileas
Fogg accepts a challenge to travel around the world in eighty days. (1) These
were chosen as there were no passenger planes in those days! Fogg travelled with his companion,
Jean Passepartout, and in the story, the two men are successful in their mission.
Fogg’s story was so interesting that it led to several real attempts at travelling around
the world within the same timeframe. The first person to try it was a woman called
Nellie Bly, in 1889.
(2) She managed to complete the trip in 72 days, making a world
record, and met the writer of the original book, Jules Verne, on the way.
Although Bly wrote a best-selling book called Around the World in 72 Days, her record was soon broken
by a man called James Willis Sayre. (3) Also using public transport, his trip
took just 54 days.
Perhaps the most impressive attempt of the early twentieth century was that of a 15-year-old Danish
boy, Palle Huld, who did the journey alone. Travelling by ship and train like Fogg, he was sponsored
by a Danish newspaper.
(4) Huld completed this ‘backwards’ circle of the earth in just 44 days.
Since then, there have been no detailed reports of anyone doing the journey in the way that Fogg,
Bly, Sayre and Huld did, but there have been other achievements. In 2009, British celebrities did
a relay version of the journey for charity in pairs. (5) The final pair finished just in time on
the 80th day. Most recently, British cyclist Mark Beaumont cycled round the world, managing to
do so in 78 days.
A Bad weather delayed her and she finished the journey a day too late.
B Just a few years later, he did the same journey she had done.
C The challenge he was given was to complete the journey by boat and train.
D This involved travelling different sections of the journey together.
E Unfortunately, he was unable to raise the money needed for the trip.
F The interesting thing was that he travelled in the opposite direction to Fogg.
G They were not very happy with this result.
H Her idea was to do the trip in order to write about it for a newspaper.
