10th Similar Triangles Project Work

The document outlines an educational activity for 10th-grade students to explore the relationship between the areas of similar triangles and the squares of their corresponding sides. It includes a detailed procedure for drawing and partitioning triangles, conducting observations, and verifying the mathematical principles involved. The student reflects on their learning experience and acknowledges the support received from peers and teachers.

Class :- 10 th Class
Name of the lesson : Similar Triangles

Areas & correponding sides Relation

AIM:-Through activities finding the Ratio of the areas of two similar triangles
Objectives: :‐ To verify the The ratio of the area of two similar triangle is
equal to the ratio of the squares of their corresponding sides.
Materials used: White paper sheet, Scale /Rubber, Paint box, Black ball point
pen or pencil
Tools: Activity based project (Experiment)
Procedure:
On the white paper sheet, drawn two similar triangles ABC and DEF. We
have the ratio of their corresponding sides same and let as have

AB: DE= BC: EF=CA: FD=5:3

ie , AB/DE=5/3 , BC/EF=5/3 , CA/FD =5/3,
ie DE =3/5 AB, EF=3/5 BC,FD=3/5 CA
Divide each side of ∆ABC into 5 equal parts and those of ∆DEF into 3 equal
parts as shown in Fig (i) and (ii).

By drawing parallel lines as shown in Fig (i) and (ii)., we have

partition ∆ABC into 25 smaller triangle of same size and also each
smaller triangle in fig (i) has same size and as that of the smaller
triangle fig (ii).
Paint the smaller triangle as shown in Fig (i) and (ii)..

∆DEF, ∆ABC are similar by S.S.S property.
OBSERVATION:‐
1.Where area of one smaller triangle in fig (i)=P (square unit )
2.Area of ∆DEF=Area of a smaller triangle in Fig (ii)=9p where area of one
smaller triangle in fig (ii)=P square units.
= = __(1)

(AB)2 /(DE)2 =(AB)2 /[3/5 AB]2 =(AB)2 /[9/25 AB]2 =25/9 ------(2)

Similarly
(BC/ (EC)
F)2 = 25/9 AND =(CA)2/(FD)2 =25/9
From steps (2) and (3) , we conclude that

= = AB)2 /(DE)2 = (BC) 2 /(EF)2 =(CA)2/(FD)2

Hence the ratio of the areas of two similar triangles is equal to the ratio
of the squares of their corresponding sides in Eqialateral triangle.
In scalene triangle:-

∆DEF, ∆ABC are similar by A.A.A property.

OBSERVATION:‐

= = 1.430209

(AB)2 /(A1B1)2 =99.0025/ 69.2224 =1.43

Similarly
(BC) 2 /(B 1C1)2 =(CA)2/ (C1 A1)2 =1.43

= AB)2 /(A1B1)2 = (BC) 2 /(B 1C1)2 =(CA)2/ (C1 A1)2

Hence the ratio of the areas of two similar triangles is equal to the ratio of
the squares of their corresponding sides in Scalene triangle.
Experience of the student : By using this activity i could easily
understand the concept of relation between ratios of the areas of a
triangle and sides of a triangle.
