The Gathering
A welcome is offered
Stand to sing
Awake, awake: fling off the night,
for God has sent a glorious light,
and we who live in Christ’s new day
must works of darkness put away.
2
Awake and rise, with love renewed,
and with the Spirit’s power endued.
The light of life in us must glow,
and fruits of truth and goodness show.
3
Let in the light: all sin expose
to Christ, whose life no darkness knows.
Before his cross for guidance kneel,
his light will judge, and judging, heal.
4
Awake, and rise up from the dead,
and Christ his light on you will shed.
Its power will wrong desires destroy,
and your whole nature fill with joy.
5
Then sing for joy, and use each day;
give thanks for everything always.
Lift up your hearts; with one accord
praise God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Words: John Raphael Peacey (1896-1971) Tune: DEUS TUORUM MILITUM AM 327ii
The President says
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you
and also with you.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and
from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The President introduces
Prayers of Penitence
When the Lord comes,
he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness,
and will disclose the purposes of the heart.
Therefore in the light of Christ let us confess our sins.
Remain standing to say
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and
against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through
negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son
Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that
we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.
Remain standing as the choir sings
Kyrie Eleison
Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy.
Christe eleison Christ, have mercy.
Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy.
The President says
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon
and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness
and keep you in life eternal, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Collect
Let us pray.
Almighty God,
give us grace to cast away the works of darkness
and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life,
in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;
that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty
to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal;
through him who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word
Old Testament Reading Isaiah 2.1-5
The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and shall be raised above the hills;
all the nations shall stream to it.
Many peoples shall come and say,
‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob;
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.’
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction,
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into ploughshares,
and their spears into pruning-hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more.
O house of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the Lord!
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The Epistle Romans 13.11-end
Brothers and sisters, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you
to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became
believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of
darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not
in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in
quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no
provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Remain seated as the choir sings Psalm 122
I was glad when they said unto me :
We will go into the house of the Lord.
Our feet shall stand in thy gates :
O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city :
that is at unity in itself.
3
For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord :
to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord.
For there is the seat of judgement :
even the seat of the house of David.
O pray for the peace of Jerusalem :
they shall prosper that love thee.
Peace be within thy walls :
and plenteousness within thy palaces.
For my brethren and companions’ sakes :
I will wish thee prosperity.
Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God :
I will seek to do thee good.
Stand
The cantor sings the Alleluia and we respond
Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
Alleluia.
Remain standing
The Gospel Matthew 24.36-44
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus spoke to his disciples:
‘About that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son,
but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son
of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they
knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the
coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one
will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one
will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is
coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of
the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have
let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man
is coming at an unexpected hour.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Maranatha: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
The choir sings
The Motet
A tender shoot has started up from a root of grace,
as ancient seers imparted from Jesse's holy race:
It blooms without a blight, blooms in the cold bleak winter,
turning our darkness into light.
This shoot Isaiah taught us, from Jesse's root should spring;
The Virgin Mary brought us the branch of which we sing;
Our God of endless might gave her this child to save us,
Thus turning darkness into light.
Words: William Bartholomew (1793-1867) Music: Otto Goldschmidt (1829-1907)
Translated from the German by Otto Goldschmidt
The Liturgy of the Sacrament
The Peace
Stand
The President says
In the tender mercy of our God,
the dayspring from on high shall break upon us,
to give light to those who dwell in darkness
and in the shadow of death
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
Members of the congregation greet one another. Please be respectful of
others’ safety and their desire to keep distance.
Remain standing to sing
The Offertory Hymn during which the table is prepared and the gifts
of the people are gathered and presented.
6
Hills of the North, rejoice,
river and mountain-spring,
hark to the advent voice;
valley and lowland, sing.
Christ comes in righteousness and love,
he brings salvation from above.
2Isles of the Southern seas,
sing to the listening earth,
carry on every breeze
hope of a world’s new birth:
in Christ shall all be made anew,
his word is sure, his promise true.
3Lands of the East, arise,
he is your brightest morn,
greet him with joyous eyes,
praise shall his path adorn:
your seers have longed to know their Lord;
to you he comes, the final word.
4Shores of the utmost West,
lands of the setting sun,
welcome the heavenly guest
in whom the dawn has come:
he brings a never-ending light
who triumphed o’er our darkest night.
5Shout, as you journey home,
songs be in every mouth,
lo, from the North they come,
from East and West and South:
in Jesus all shall have their rest,
in him the universe be blest.
Words: Editors of English Praise (1975) Tune: LITTLE CORNARD AM 39
based on Charles Ernest Oakley (1832-65)
The President takes the bread and wine and praises God for his gifts
As the grain once scattered in the fields
and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside
are now reunited on this table in bread and wine,
so, Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together
from the corners of the earth into your kingdom. Amen.
7
The Eucharistic Prayer
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
The President praises God for his mighty acts
It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise,
almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son.
For when he humbled himself to come among us in human flesh,
he fulfilled the plan you formed before the foundation of the world
to open for us the way of salvation.
Confident that your promise will be fulfilled, we now watch for the day
when Christ our Lord will come again in glory.
And so we join our voices with angels and archangels and with all the
company of heaven to proclaim your glory,
for ever praising you and singing:
The Choir sings
Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Holy, holy, holy Lord,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth. God of power and might.
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.
The President recalls the Last Supper
We praise and bless you, loving Father,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord;
and as we obey his command,
send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured
may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
On the night before he died he had supper with his friends
and, taking bread, he praised you.
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.
Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
8
So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,
in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice
made once for all upon the cross.
Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation,
we proclaim his death and resurrection
until he comes in glory.
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died:
Christ is risen:
Christ will come again.
Lord of all life,
help us to work together for that day
when your kingdom comes
and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.
Look with favour on your people,
gather us in your loving arms
and bring us with all the saints
to feast at your table in heaven.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
The President says
As we join our prayers with the Church Universal, so we say,
each in our own language, the prayer that Jesus taught us.
Our Father, who art in heaven, Notre Père…
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; Vater Unser…
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven. Onze Vader…
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, Padre Nuestro…
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Ojcze Nasz…
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil. Baba Yetu…
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory, E to matou Matua…
for ever and ever.
Amen. Ein Tad…

Breaking of the Bread
The President breaks the consecrated bread, saying
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
Jesus is the Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
Sit for
The Distribution of Communion
Please come up to receive Communion as directed by stewards.
Please ask the priest if you would prefer a blessing or a gluten-free
host.
We have returned to offering the chalice at the time of Communion, but
please do not feel any pressure to receive from the common cup, as the
Church teaches that the Sacrament is received fully in one kind.
We keep a prayerful silence together during Communion as we prepare
to receive the sacrament and to pray afterwards.
During Communion, the choir sings the Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
10
Prayer after Communion
Silence is kept
Stand as the President moves to the Advent Wreath with members of the
Sunday Club, and the first candle is lit.
Let us pray.
Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, God of our ancestors:
to you be praise and glory for ever.
You called the patriarchs to live by the light of faith
and to journey in the hope of your promised fulfilment.
May we be obedient to your call
and be ready and watchful to receive your Christ,
a lamp to our feet and a light to our path;
for you are our light and our salvation.
Blessed be God for ever.
Lord Jesus, light of the world,
born in David's city of Bethlehem,
born like him to be a King:
Be born in our hearts this Christmas,
be king of our lives today.
Amen.
11
The Dismissal
Lo, he comes, with clouds descending, 3Those dear tokens of his passion
once for favoured sinners slain; still his dazzling body bears,
thousand thousand saints attending cause of endless exultation
swell the triumph of his train: to his ransomed worshippers:
Alleluia! with what rapture
God appears on earth to reign. gaze we on those glorious scars!
2Every eye shall now behold him 4Yea, Amen, let all adore thee,
robed in dreadful majesty; high on thine eternal throne;
those who set at nought and sold him, Saviour, take the power and glory,
pierced and nailed him to the Tree, claim the kingdom for thine own:
deeply wailing Alleluia!
shall the true Messiah see. Thou shalt reign, and thou alone.
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-88) Tune: HELMSLEY AM 41
and John Cennick (1718-55)
The President says
Christ the Son of Righteousness shine upon you,
Scatter the darkness from before your path,
and make you ready to meet him when he comes in glory;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always;
Amen.
Go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
