'In 1793, the Reign of Terror began under Robespierre. Those whom he saw as enemies of the
republic were arrested, imprisoned, and then tried by a revolutionary tribunal. If declared guilty, they
were guillotined. Even simple criticism of the government could be treated as treason. However,
laws were introduced to abolish slavery and control prices of essential goods.'
