ITEM 1

In a certain district in Uganda, local cow herders have successfully maintained

grass cover on their farms for 10 years by grazing cows in paddocks. However,
they registered losses over the last two years due to infestation by microorganisms
that damage the lining of mammary gland ducts, stomach, ileum, respiratory and
urinary tract including kidney tubules of their cows.

A regional veterinary doctor investigated the infected animal tissues and found out
two types of microorganisms;

▪ Methane producing microorganisms which are thought to survive in extreme

conditions.

▪ Microorganisms that have peptidoglycan in their cell walls.

The presence of these microorganisms is linked to the recent increase in

atmospheric temperature.

Task

a) Basing on non-structural characteristics, compare the types of microorganisms

identified by the doctor.

ITEM II

After leaving school while he was not yet employed, Alex went back to his village
and he found his parents complaining of the low yields of tomatoes and continuous
pest infestation. Furthermore, Kigezi was affected by low temperatures and low
sunlight intensity. He recalled what he had studied in class and decided to come
up with an innovation so as to help his parents. He set up a greenhouse for his
parent’s tomato. The innovation resulted into high crop yields by increasing their
productivity.

Task

a) Explain how the environmental conditions experienced in the region were

responsible for the low tomato yields before Alex’s innovation.

should plant so as to realize high yields.

ITEM III

Truck drivers are always complaining of dosing especially when it gets late in the
night. They a further added that the available energy drinks on the market are no
longer effective on them. Donsy pharmaceuticals decided to design a drug called
Colellin which is swallowed using water and it has an effect on Complex IV in the
mitochondria to boost energy production. However, the internees at the
pharmaceuticals are confused on how the drug will help keep the truck drivers
sober.

Task

a) Explain how the drug reaches the mitochondrion after being absorbed into
blood stream.
