1. A cinema hall has seats for 400 people. The seats are in two categories; A and B which are charged at sh.
200 and sh. 500 per show respectively. The number of category B booked per show does not exceed that of
category A. For the hall expenses to be covered at least 70 category B seats must be booked and they must be
more than a quarter of the total number of seats booked.
a) Other than x 0 and y 0 , write down four inequalities to represent the condition satisfied by the
seats per show. (4 marks)
b) Represent these inequalities on a graph. (4 marks)
c) If the hall is charged at sh. 45000 per day and the operation runs 3 hours per day, find the
maximum possible profit per day. (2 marks)

2. A fundi makes two types of overalls, A and B. Overall A requires 2½ meters of material while overall
B requires 3 meters of material. The fundi use not more than 600 meters of material in making both overalls.
The fundi must make not be more than 80 overall of type A and not less than 100 of type B each day.
(a) Write down four inequalities to represent the above information. (4marks)
(b) Draw inequalities and shade the unwanted regions. (4marks)
c) If the business makes a profit of shs. 80 on garment A and a profit of shs.60 on garment B, how many
garments of each type must he make to maximize its total profit? Hence find maximum profit.

4. A farmer has at least 50 acres of land on which he plans to plant potatoes and cabbages. Each acre of potatoes
requires 6 men and each acre of cabbages requires 2 men. The farmer has 240 men available and he must plant at
least 10 acres of potatoes. The profit on potatoes is ksh. 1000 per acre and on cabbages is ksh.1200 per acre. If he
plants x acres of potatoes and y acres of cabbages:
(a) Write down three inequalities in x and y to describe this information. (3 marks)
(b) Represent these inequalities graphically. (4 marks)
(c) Use your graph to determine the number of acres for each crop which will give maximum profit and hence
find the maximum profit. (3 marks)

5. Kisumu bus park allows 10m2 of parking space for each matatu and 30m2 for each bus. The total space
available is 3000m2. the maximum number of vehicles at any time must not exceed 20. There must be at least
as many matatus as buses. If the number of matatus is x and buses is y.
a) Write down three inequalities which must be satisfied. (3mks)
b) On the grid provided, draw a graph to represent the in equalities in (a) above (3mks)
c) If the parking charge for a matatu is sh. 50 and for a bus is sh. 250, find how many vehicles of each
kind that should be admitted to maximize income. (3mks)
d) Calculate the income in (c) above. (1mk)

6. During installation of electricity bulbs in street lighting, a dealer is required to supply two types of bulbs A
and B. The total number of bulbs should not be more than 400. He must supply more of A than B and type A
bulbs should not be more than 300 and B should not be less than 80.
(a) Write down in terms of x and y all inequalities representing the information above. ( 3 marks )
(b) On the grid provided draw all the inequalities and shade the unwanted region. ( 4 marks )
(c ) If type A costs Ksh. 450 per piece and B Ksh. 350 per piece and that the higher the cost the higher the
profit,
(i) Use the graph to determine the number of each type of bulb that he should supply to maximize profit.

7. At Ogana farm, a cow takes at least 180 units of vitamin A and not less than 160 units of vitamin B. Vitamin
A and B are available in two types of feeds, x and y. Type x feeds contains 45 units per kg of vitamin A and 20
units per kg of vitamin B while type Y feeds contains 30 units per kg of vitamin A and 40 units of vitamin B.
Taking x and y to be the number of Kgs of feed x and y respectively taken by the cow per day.
a) Form all the inequalities that represent the above information. (3 Marks)
b) Show the region described by the all inequalities in (a) above graphically. (3 Marks)
c) Given that 1kg of x costs sh40 and 1kg of y costs sh50, use your graph in (b) above to determine
the least cost of maintaining a cow at the Ogana farm. (4 Marks)

8. A manager wishes to hire two types of machine. He considers the following facts:

He has a maximum of 24m2 of floor space and a maximum of 36 men available. In addition, he is not
allowed to hire more machines of type B than of type A.
(a) If he hires x machines of type A and y machines of type B, write down all the inequalities that

(c) If the profit from machine A is sh. 4 per hour and that from using B is shs.8 per hour. What number of

9. Mukumbeti flying company has two types of aeroplanes. The smaller one uses 180 litres of fuel per hour while
the bigger one uses 300 litres per hour. The fuel available per week is 18000 litres. The company is allowed 80
flying hours per week. To keep the aeroplane in good condition, the bigger plane must be flown for x hours a week
while the smaller aeroplane must be flown y hours per week.
a) Write down all the inequalities in x and y, representing the above information. (3mks)
b) On the grid provided, draw all the inequalities in (a) above by shading the unwanted regions (4mks)
c) The profit on the smaller aeroplane is Ksh.4000 per hour while that on the bigger one is Ksh. 6000 per hour.
Use the graph drawn in (b) above to estimate the maximum profit that the company made per week. (3mks)

10. An airline has to fly 1000 passengers and 35000 kg of luggage from Nairobi to Kampala. Two types of aircrafts
are available. Type A takes 100 passengers and 2000 kg of luggage. Type B takes 60 passengers and 3000 kg of
luggage. The airline must not use more than 16 aircrafts altogether.
(a) if the airline hires x type A aircrafts and y type B aircrafts, write down 3 inequalities to represent the

11. In a school trip there were buses and y luxury vans. Each bus was hired at Ksh.1000 and could
carry 60 students. Each van was hired at Ksh.2000 and could carry 30 students.

(ii) There should at least 3 buses. (1 mark)
(i) The school should be not spent more than Ksh.18000 on the

12. Mr.Ondieki wishes to take students for a tour. The number of students to be taken should be atleast 60.Each girl
should contribute ksh 1000 and each boy ksh 1500 and the money to be contributed must not exceed shs. 120000. If
this trip is to be successful the number of boys must be greater than the number of girls. The boys must be less than
50.
(a) Write down four inequalities to represent this information taking the number of boys and
girls to be x and y respectively. (4 marks)

(c) Determine the optimum number of boys and girls to be taken in order to minimize the cost. (2mrks)

13. A furniture supplier deals in two types of tables the ordinary tables and the special tables. The cost of each
ordinary table is ksh.400 while that of each special table is ksh.900. The supplier is prepared to spend a maximum of
ksh 22500. It is not profitable for him to supply less than 20 tables. The ordinary tables are less than twice the
special tables but more than 15. Taking x to represent number of ordinary tables and y for special tables.

c) Given that an ordinary table gives a profit of ksh.150 while a special table gives a profit of ksh.300.

14. A principal of a certain Girls High school had sh 21 000 available and decided to purchase a number of
Kiswahili and Business studies text books. A Kiswahili text book and a Business studies text book costs sh 280 and
sh 350 respectively. She has to buy at least 26 Kiswahili text books and twice the number of Business studies text
books bought must be less than the number of Kiswahili text hooks. Take the number of Kiswahili text books and of
Business studies text books bought to be x and y respectively.
