Tutorial Sheet – 1
Course: MA512 – Linear Algebra
Instructor: Prof. Muslim Malik

Date: August 13, 2025

1. Maria had $12100 to invest. She decided to invest her money in bonds and mutual funds.
She invested a portion of the money in bonds paying 8% interest per year and the remainder
in a mutual fund paying 9% per year. After one year the total income she had earned from
the investments was $1043. How much had she invested at each rate?
2. Two planes start out 2800 km apart and move towards each other meeting after 3.5 hours.
One plane flies at 75 km/hour slower than the other plane. What was the speed of each
plane?
3. A pump can empty a pool in 7 hours and a different pump can empty the same pool in 12
hours. How long does it take for both pumps working together to empty the pool?
4. A boy is walking along the path y = ax2 + bx + c through the points (−6, 8), (−2, −12)
and (3, 8). He wants to meet his friend at P (7, 60). Will he meet his friend?
5. If ax2 + bx + c is divided by x + 3, x − 5 and x − 1, the remainders are 21, 61 and 9
respectively. Find a, b and c.
6. If x and y are two distinct solutions of the non-homogeneous system Ax = b, then prove
that system Ax = b has infinite number of solutions.
7. Use the reduced row echelon form to solve the following system of linear equations.
(a) 3x + 8y = 5
4x + 11y = 7.
(b) 3x1 + x2 − 4x3
x1 + 10x3 = 5
4x1 + x2 + 6x3 = 1.
8. Use Gauss elimination method and Gauss - Jordan elimination method to solve the fol-
lowing system of linear equations.
(a) x1 − 2x2 − 6x3 = 5
2x1 + 4x2 + 12x3 = −6
x1 − 4x2 − 12x3 = 9.
(b) 3x1 + 5x3 = 0
2x2 + 4x3 = 1
x1 + 9x2 = −1.
9. Consider the system of linear equations

Ax = b,

where    

A = 2 4 3 , b = 8 .

(a) Find rank(A) and rank(A | b) and determine whether the system has:
• a unique solution,
• infinitely many solutions, or
• no solution.
(b) Now change b to    

b = 7 ,
 b = 8 .

and repeat part (a).

10. For what values of α, the following linear system have

x1 + 3x2 + αx3 = 4
2x1 − x2 + 2αx3 = 1
αx1 + 5x2 + x3 = 6

(a) unique solution;

(b) no solution;
(c) infinitely many solutions.

Use Gauss elimination method.

 
