Tech Writing Infographic Assignment

Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to get practice in creating a more visual form of
professional/business communication.

Scenario:
You work as an assistant manager in the Alvin Community College Learning Lab. You are in
charge of marketing Tutoring and Writing Center services. Lately tutors have explained that
many students do not understand what needs to happen in a tutoring session and do not always
bring what they need for a successful session. One of the tutors has done a good job collecting
pertinent information for what to expect in a tutoring session, and what the tutor and the students
need to do to best help the student.

BE SURE TO USE THE PROVIDED INFORMATION AT THE END OF THIS ASSIGNMENT

SHEET.

Assignment:
Craft a readable, attractive infographic using Canva (free online) including the information on
the original sheet. Use the information you have gained in the past chapters, especially in
document design, to communicate this information. Please make sure that all information is
included. You may make the infographic longer and/or front/back if needed. The goal is to
communicate the information in a friendly manner that encourages the students to come to
tutoring but also helps the students know what to bring and expect. Remember the audience is
current ACC students and staff.
Canva is a free online graphic design tool. (There is also a paid version, but you will not need to
pay for anything, although you will need to create an account.) There are many free infographic
templates and elements to choose from (the ones you have to pay for have a little crown on them
or a dollar sign – so be sure not to choose them). There are also YouTube tutorials on using
Canva; it is fairly easy with some practice. After you have created your infographic, click the
Share button, and choose to download as a PDF. Then upload the PDF to the appropriate
Infographic Turnitin Submission link. (If you have any problems with submissions, email me
before the assignment is past due and attach the file to the email.)

I will be looking for a title and at least four graphics of some kind in the Infographic.
Take the time to proofread. I will be looking for grammatical/mechanical errors.

Please see the below document for the information to use for the Infographic (on the next page
after the due date information).
Due Date:
Submit the PDF through Turnitin by the end of night (11:59 P.M.) Sunday, June 15.

I know that Turnitin sometimes gives problems with this kind of submission. If you have a
problem, before the due date is past, submit the file in an email to KVyvial@[Link]
Student & Tutor Expectations
Welcome to the ACC Learning Lab. We hope that you will find your time spent with us helpful
and rewarding. We ask that you keep the following in mind while utilizing our services.

Tutors expect that students will…

• Come prepared with all necessary materials.

• Be an active participant in the tutoring session.

• Be as specific as possible about what you are hoping to achieve in the tutoring session. Ask
questions and listen to suggestions.

• Attempt your homework on your own before bringing it to a tutor to help; a tutor cannot do
your work for you.

• For Writing appointments, print your draft BEFORE the session to share with the tutor.

• Limit distractions. Please silence your cell phone before entering the Learning Lab. If you need
to take a phone call, please exit the Learning Lab to avoid disrupting other students.

Students can expect that tutors will…

• Be punctual, supportive, and professional.

• Answer questions to the best of their abilities

• Work WITH you but not FOR you

• Set clear expectations for the session and encourage you to be an independent learner.

• Offer a positive attitude and be respectful of your diverse perspective and learning style.

• NOT correct your homework, projects, take-home exams, or math labs.

• NOT try to predict what your grade will be on your assignments and cannot speak for your
instructor.

On-Campus and Virtual Appointments

• Appointments are 1 hour. Tutors will begin to wrap up the session at the 50-minute mark.

Virtual Appointments

• Attend all virtual appointments on a laptop or desktop computer. Virtual tutoring sessions will
not work on a smartphone or most smart devices.

• Email learninglab@[Link] or your tutor if you have problems accessing a virtual

appointment.
Scheduling

• DO NOT wait until the last minute to schedule an appointment.

• Only schedule a meeting you know you can attend and be punctual.

Tutoring Attendance

• Arrive on time. If students are 15 minutes late, that will be considered a No Show.

• Students are allowed two (2) tutoring No Shows per 8-week or 16-week term.

• Students who No Show three (3) tutoring sessions will be required to meet with an Academic

Support Specialist

• Please cancel at least 2 hours prior to the appointment through ConexEd, call 281-756-3566, or
email learninglab@[Link].

*We are here to support you in your educational endeavors in any way possible.
Please email the Academic Support Center Coordinator, Dr. Eli Herrera,
