INTRODUCTION:

Coir fibre is the raw material of the industry and during the extraction process
coir pith is generated in large quantities as waste. India is the largest coir
producer in the world accounting for more than 80 per cent of the total world
production of coir fiber.Coir pith is also known as coco pith, or cocopeat, for its
role as a substitute for peat moss in gardening.

COIR PITH :

Brown coir pith comes from ripe, mature coconuts, while younger, immature
coconuts produce white coir pith.

3
To produce coir pith, the waste from coir fiber is washed, treated, dried, and
graded. It may be shipped in powder or compressed into blocks for gardening
use.

Coir pith is a multi-purpose growing substance that can be used as a potting

mix addition, soil-less medium, hydroponics grower, and more. It provides good
environmental support. Coir pith has strong water retention properties, while
allowing air to pass through. Because of its unique organic compounds, coco
pith can support strong root growth, contributing to a longer lifespan for plants.

For these and many other reasons, coco pith has grown in popularity with
home gardeners, as well as in the horticulture and agricultural industries.

4
Pith:

Pith is a soft and spongy plant material. Usually found in the roots and stem of a
plant, it is often a white substance that turns brown as it matures. The main
purpose of pith is to transport nutrients, using its large but thin-walled
parenchyma cells. These cells are easily filled with water and nutrients.

RAW MATERIALS REQUIRED:

The raw material required to start the business is very cheap and is available in
plenty. Coconut shells are the major raw material required to start the business.

Coir industries became famous because of the abundance of raw material in

local districts.

REVIEW OF COIR INDUSTRY:

Coir industry is an agro based traditional industry providing means of livelihood

for more than 7 lakhs of workers predominantly women.

BENEFITS:

Coir pith is naturally waterproof, is one of the few natural fibers resistant to
saltwater damage which has a neutral pH balance, and is widely available and
environmentally friendly.

These qualities make it an ideal substance for agriculture and horticulture. Coir
pith has the ability to retain large amounts of water. It is used as a replacement

5
for traditional peat moss to supplement gardening soil. It is also used as a soil-
less medium for some plant cultivation.

By itself, coco pith does not contain a high amount of nutrients. For this reason it
is typically an addition to gardening soil. Because it is free of bacteria and fungus,
and is generally believed to be an insect and mold repellent, it makes a welcome
gardening addition.

Coco pith is mixed with sand, compost, and fertilizer to make a high quality potting
soil. It can be used for growing mushrooms.

One of coco pith’s most attractive qualities is that it can be reused up to three
times, making it more sustainable than peat moss and other alternatives.
Considered environmentally friendly and widely available, coir pith makes an
excellent addition as a multi-purpose growing medium.

VISTA COIR PITH DRYER IMAGE:

7
The by-product obtained during the process of Coir Fibre Extraction is Coir Pith.
The raw coir pith (high EC) is received and washed in the soft water to reduce
the EC. The low EC pith is dried and is subjected to sieving / mixing process.

The resultant pith is fed into the compacting machine in which the pith is
converted into blocks. Then the blocks are packed and then dispatched to
sales.
Normally with the traditional method of pith drying (Sun drying) the dust
and sand particles will gets mixed where we will be able to get only 80% of
coir pith with remaining 20% of waste particles mixed, whereas with the
modern method of machine drying we will be able to get assured 99.9% of
coir pith without the mix of dust and sand particles.

PROPERTIES OF COIR PITH:
Coir pith has high water holding capacity of 8 times of its weight. It has fixed
carbon, low sulphur, fats and ash. Nutrient content of coir pith varies with place,
method of retting, rate of decomposition and storage method.
The major properties of coir pith are:
 High water holding capacity, i.e., 6-8 times than its weight.
 Excellent moisture retention even after drying. Slow degradation due to
high lignocellulosic bonding.
 High porosity, stores and releases nutrients over extended periods of time.
Greater physical resiliency that withstands compression better.
 Excellent aeration / oxygenation providing enhanced root penetration.
Acceptable Electrical Conductivity (EC), pH and Cation Exchange Capacity
(CEC).
 100% degradable, organic and a renewable resource.
 Contains natural substances beneficial for plant growth.

APPLICATIONS OF COIR PITH:

 Mulching effect to preserve the moisture and soil conditioning
 Organic manure (Compost)
 Briquetted fuel for chulas and furnaces, bricks and roofing sheets for
building purposes etc.
 Production of particle board.
 Activated carbon
 Textile industries
 Erosion control
 Bio-gas production

10
 Mushroom cultivation
 Potting mixture for seedling growth
 Extracting lignosulphonates
 Wetting agent

MARKET ASSESSMENT:

About two-thirds of the world’s production of coir and coir products are done in
India.
Although India has an extensive coastline with coconut palms, the emergence
and economic advantages of the coir industry is there for major coconut growing
provinces and Union Territories, for instance, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil
Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Goa, Orissa, Andaman & Nicobar,
Pondicherry, Lakshadweep, etc.
It gives employment to about 7 lakh people.
Kerala is the largest producer of coconut, contributing as much as 45% of
country’s total production, whereas Tamilnadu stands second in cultivation of
coconut and first in production of brown coir fibre in the country.
The coir market is predicted to reach $526.70 million by 2027, representing a
9.2% CAGR from 2020 to 2027.

DEMAND OF THE PRODUCT:

The world-wide demand of coir products have increased tremendously. The
major portion of demand is primarily met by India & Srilanka. Although Srilanka
is gaining on the global coir product export share, India, who has witnessed rapid
growth in coir product export since the early 1990s, still holds 80% of the global
coir product market. India produces many different coir products (mats, matting,
11
geotextiles, rugs, carpet, rubberized coir), and export them to more than 43
countries around the world. The coconut growing countries are India, Srilanka,
Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam. These are the countries which are producing
Coconut products and supplying it to 168 countries ( Hence, there is a huge
demand for this products especially in Mexico, USA, UK , Germany ,Netherlands,
China, Japan, Australia ).
