Who Are Called as “Indigenous Peoples”

“A common denominator for more than 370 million people, found in more
than 70 countries worldwide - ILO

Popularly known as tribal peoples, native peoples, adivasi, janajati, etc.


They have their own cultures, languages and customs.

PVTGs

Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) are "the most vulnerable"


groups among STs.

75 communities have been identified as PVTGs in -


18 States and 1 UT i.e. Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Highest in Odisha (mostly Saura community).

On the recommendations of Dhebar Commission (1961), PVTGs were first


recognised as Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs), later renamed PVTGs.

Eklavya Model Residential Schools


(EMRS)

Chhattisgarh were granted Habitat Rights under the Forest

Who are called “DNTS”


“De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes”

“Poorest of the poor, most marginalised and most downtrodden


communities” who are subject to “social stigma, atrocity and exclusion”. -

“Denotified Tribes” are a heterogeneous group engaged in occupations like


transport, key-making, snake charmers, etc.

The colonial government notified some of the tribal communities of


being “hereditary criminals’ under the Criminal Tribes Act, 1871*.

After Independence, they were ‘de-notified’ from the list of Criminal


Tribes.

Several Denotified Tribes were included in -

Scheduled Caste (SC)

Scheduled Tribes (ST) and

Other Backward Caste (OBC) lists

All nomadic tribes (NTs) are not DNTs, but all DNTs are NTs.

Nomads and Semi-Nomads are As per the Renke Commission (2008),


social groups who frequently there are nearly 1,500 nomadic and
move from one place to another semi-nomadic tribes and 198
for livelihood Denotified tribes, comprising 15 crore
Indians.
