1.

Consider the following system of equations:

{ )
2 x 4 + 3 x 1 −7 x 2 − 2 x 3=− 9
5 x 2 −3 x 1 +1 x 3=5
.
− 4 x 2+ 6 x1 −5 x 4=7
−5 x 3 − 9 x1 +5 x 2+12 x 4 =11

Perform all operations we have performed to our companion system, starting from the Gaussian
elimination, performing the transition from the Gaussian elimination to the L U factorization of
the matrix A . Then, directly calculate the elements of the L and U matrices of A=LU .

1. Convert the following A matrices to the product of a unit lower triangular and an upper
triangular matrix by performing a series of consecutive transformations ( I + μr s E ) A
( r s)

Directly calculate the elements of the L and U matrices coming from the factorization
A=LU .

[ )
1 2 3 4
2 5 8 11
A=
3 8 14 20
4 11 20 30

[ )

A= 3 1 − 2
−1 2 1

A= 2 1 6
5 0 7

1. If you are willing and are capable to, you can try to do these in Python, both by using the
built-in function for LU and by manually implementing it.
