This test is used for the detection of antibodies to Salmonella infection caused by serotype, [Link], [Link] A,
[Link] B in serum of patients with symptoms suggestive of enteric fever.
* Enteric fever is a food and water borne disease with main symptoms of fever, headache, nausea.
* Antibodies to the infection develop in the 2nd week of fever. Hence, a rising titre repeated in a week’s time is to be
considered for diagnosis of enteric fever.
* The result of this test should be correlated clinically and with other laboratory findings of the patient as the significant
titre depends on the endemicity of Enteric Fever in the region.
* Individuals vaccinated with Typhoid vaccine (TAB) may show moderately elevated titres of all three "H" antibodies.
* Infection like Malaria, Dengue, Miliary Tuberculosis, Endocarditis, Brucellosis, Influenza etc and immunological
disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Rheumatic Fever or Nephritic Syndrome may give anamnestic response
showing significant titre for Salmonella antibodies.
* A negative result indicates the absence of detectable levels of anti-Salmonella antibodies at the time of testing.
However, it does not exclude early-stage illness or prior antibiotic exposure.
* Rising titres on paired samples taken 7–10 days apart provide stronger diagnostic value than a single measurement.
NA* - Biological reference interval is not applicable as the test detects antibodies developed due to acquired infections.
