1. INTRODUCTION
Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant found in coffee, tea, and various other beverages. In this project,
the amount of caffeine in different tea samples will be estimated using extraction techniques.
2. AIM
To determine the caffeine content in various tea samples using a simple extraction method.
3. THEORY
Caffeine is a white, bitter alkaloid that acts as a stimulant. It is slightly soluble in water and highly soluble in
organic solvents like chloroform or dichloromethane. The extraction method involves boiling the tea, filtering
it, and extracting caffeine using an organic solvent.
4. REQUIREMENTS
Chemistry Investigatory Project
Tea samples (green, black, herbal)
Distilled water
Beakers and funnels
Filter paper
Separating funnel
Dichloromethane (DCM) or chloroform
Analytical balance
Evaporating dish
Hot plate
5. PROCEDURE
1. Weigh about 5 g of tea leaves and boil in 100 mL of distilled water for 1015 minutes.
2. Filter the solution to remove solid particles.
3. Pour the filtrate into a separating funnel.
4. Add 20 mL of dichloromethane to the funnel and shake gently.
5. Allow the layers to separate. The lower organic layer contains caffeine.
6. Repeat the extraction twice more for maximum recovery.
7. Collect the organic layer and evaporate it in a dish.
8. Weigh the dry residue, which is caffeine.
6. OBSERVATIONS
Sample | Mass of Tea (g) | Mass of Caffeine Extracted (g)
-------|------------------|-------------------------------
Green | 5 | 0.028
Black | 5 | 0.035
Chemistry Investigatory Project
Herbal | 5 | 0.002
7. RESULT
The caffeine content varies across different tea samples. Black tea contains the highest caffeine content
among the tested samples.
8. CONCLUSION
This experiment successfully determined the caffeine content in various tea samples. The extraction method
used was effective and showed varying caffeine levels depending on the type of tea.
9. PRECAUTIONS
Handle organic solvents with care in a well-ventilated area.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Ensure accurate weighing of materials.
Use dry apparatus for solvent extraction.
