ABSTRACT

Information Technology has developed so rapidly that identifies changes, so rapidly in interaction

by using technology-based communication media. The internet and work-based entertainment are

one of the primary apparatuses in the appropriation of data today that changed the face of the

media globally. Using gadgets like cellphones and laptops, students can join virtually during

online classes. It is also their way of other lessons easier through the use of their gadgets.

Likewise, it is also entertaining on their part that made them more focused in their studies.

TikTok is digital social media that students used as form of audio visuals. It is an online platform

that made them feel entertained while learning goes on through this. They found it efficient due to

its brief recordings and has great ideal of music support so clients can perform with dance,

freeform, and substantially more that empowers the imagination of these learners. However, if the

amount of duration used in the use of social media can cause students experience insomnia,

which can result in decreased of concentration, each of interest and motivation to learn and can

even cause of students delay inn attending the teaching and learning process in school, they

CHAPTER 1:

The Problem and Its Backround

INTRODUCTION

Information technology in recent years has developed so rapidly. This condition

identifies changes in interaction by using technology-based communication media.
The Internet and web-based entertainment are one of the primary apparatuses in the
appropriation of data today. Globally, it has changed the face of the media. As the
general rule, the function of virtual entertainment is to convey messages to many
online entertainment clients themselves to be more specific as news or data pictures or
photographs and furthermore video joins with the application on the cell phone it
makes it more straightforward for individuals to get the web-based entertainment
whenever and any place. The presence of social media has brought its own influence
on the activities carried out by society today. Alongside the times, social media
should have the option to answer the requirements of the local area, especially among
students. Social media is also expected to be able to change the way of view and
behavior in communication between friends and must be able to improve the quality
of life of students both in terms of behavior and quality of learning. (Haleem, 2022)

The effects of social media addiction on one’s health are mostly unknown. According
to recent studies, there are different health repercussions depending on how severe the
addiction is, and rising social media use is predicted to have more serious health
effects. Thailand discovered that those who were more addicted also appeared to

be less capable of practicing mindfulness (i.e. the ability to be fully engaged with the
present moment). Addiction to social media may lower performance and success at
work, in school, and other spheres of life (Petrillo, 2021).

With the headway of innovation today, there are numerous social media that can be
utilized by people to use as advice in discussing. However, in this study researchers
will focus on one social media namely TikTok, it is a digital social media that is
medium in the form of audio visuals. Because this media is a social media that can be
seen and can also be heard. There are so many users of this application, namely
students. Learners are so happy to use social media because for them it can entertain
them when they are bored. TikTok is an online entertainment application that can give
extraordinary and intriguing embellishments that can be utilized by its clients.
Particularly with the simple way it works, which is to make brief recordings and can
be shown to companions or different clients. This brief video social application has a
great deal of music support so clients can perform with dance, freeform, and
substantially more that should be possible to empower the imagination of its clients to
become content makers. However, if the amount of duration used in the use of social
media can cause students experience insomnia, which can result in decreased
concentration, lack of interest and motivation to learn, and can even cause of student
delays in attending the teaching and learning process in school. They suggest that in
addition to causing insomnia in learners concerning intensity, social media use also
results in students learning discipline being disrupted.

Teenagers are the main focus target for this app. Despite this, many users abuse the
app, portraying TikTok as a terrible app with more negative consequences than

CHAPTER 2:

This chapter presents the Review of the Related Literature, Theoretical or

Conceptual Framework, and Research Questions.

A. Review of the Related Literature

People of all ages make use of social media as one of the most extensively used modes of
communication. Particularly, students have easy access to the internet and participate in
social networking activities. Students are discovered to spend more time on social media
than they do on their academics. Students spend a lot of time on social media conversing
and making new friends rather than reading their books (Alam & Aktar, 2021).

Findings showed that social media has a good impact on the development and
maintenance of relationships among users, which helps students satisfy their academic
needs. Social media is more useful to international students as it helps them develop new
relationships that aid their academic success (Kim & Khang, 2014).

Students’ learning is affected by their use of social media, which has a direct impact on
their attendance at school. Academic achievement and social media have an impact on
one another. When a student becomes too engaged in using social media, his academic
performance suffers as a result (Tamayo & Dela Cruz, 2014).

Due its inappropriate content and Pornography. Both parents and interviewees claim that
the app contains vulgarity and inappropriate comments, with the interviewees claiming
that girls are more likely to get cheap and objectifying comments. Most users feel that the
app is relatively safe in terms of privacy settings, despite new rules being introduced
following the app’s suspension in India. It is not safe for youngsters due to its highly
provocative and profane content. Two of the interviewees stated that “age is only a
number” and that children should be monitored on the app. This indicates that this app
should play the role of “gatekeeper” and remove hazardous content’s energy. By
providing great content, it can also improve users’ “aesthetic taste” and meet their high-
level “spiritual demands.” (Jaffar, B. A., Riaz, S., & Mushtaq, A., 2019)

“TikTok is a destruction”. TikTok has become a popular app for people of many
different ages. Users can create whatever type of content videos they want on this app;
they can also post it for anyone to see. This app has attracted some students’ attention.
They can dance to some top-rated songs and gain some followers from posting them. But
along having fun, students still have to focus on their studies. But because of using
TikTok they lost track of time as they use it more frequently and became addicted to the
platform. According to Mekler (2021)

“Be a wise user”. (Dahliana, Atin, & Nurul, 2022), In today’s digital-based era TikTok is
one of the known application in different countries. The use of this can have a big impact
on social media and education. Many information’s are spreading in this app, ranging

SCHOOL

from positive to negative influences on all age groups. Its widespread can help users to be
wise in their use of social media and effectively circulate information to the public.

According to Lictawa, Romarate, & Sorion (2022), Phone notifications from TikTok can
be distracting, potentially increasing daily usage. The more notification users receive, the
more likely they are to use the app, impacting various aspects such as time spent on
TikTok, attention in class, and schoolwork completion.

The study “Teachers Act Like We’re Robots”: TikTok as a Window they received and
provided emotional and educational help to peers through the Into Youth Experiences of
Online Learning During COVID-19” (Literat, I., 2021) In context of the pandemic’s
tragic background, teenagers regarded online schoolwork as demanding and unforgiving.
Teachers supplied them with support, empathy, and genuineness, and platform. The
linkages between young people’s home, school, and social life become increasingly
obvious because of students’ home circumstances. This research emphasizes the
importance of attending to adolescent views to design fairer and empowered educational
futures by promoting a grounded, bottom-up understanding of students’ experiences and
perceptions—shared in their chosen places and means of expression.

In the case study entitled “Socio-educational implications of technology use during

COVID-19: A case study in General Santos City, Philippines” (Toquero & Talidong,
2020), the authors believe that technology has the potential to improve social ties, but that
it should not be used to replace traditional forms of social engagement. As a result, there
is a need to do empirical study on virtual relationships during and after the epidemic to
learn how technology is influencing people’s social connections, social behaviors, and
educational achievement in the virtual world. Authors also suggests that future research
should focus on how to use Facebook to improve students’ academic results in the local
