Utilization of Banana Peels and Carton in Making Seedling Pot
RRL
According to Bashir K. (2024) Traditional plastic contributes significantly to
environmental pollution due to their non-biodegradable nature, while banana
peels, a common agro-industrial waste, are often discarded without proper
utilization. The research envisages to develop an eco-friendly solution by
creating biodegradable composite pots from banana peels. Banana peel powder
and deoiled rice bran plasticized by cashew nut shell liquid and glycerol into
pellets. Pellets were molded into pots using injection molding at suitable
temperature and pressure. Processing resulted in significant changes in physical
properties of the pot and raw materials. CNSL and biopolymers demonstrated
strong physical interaction during the construction of a 3D network of pots. The
novelty of the work lies in its innovative integration of waste management and
sustainable product development.
In the study of Khanyile, N. et al., (2024), Agriculture Disposing of banana peels
(BPs) as bio-organic waste is an environmental challenge. Rich in potassium,
BPs are often discarded despite their agricultural value. Reports on the
valorization of BP are increasing, but no review has focused on BP fertilizer
preparation methods. This study aims to review and analyze these methods to
guide researchers and agriculturists in optimizing BP utilization, promoting
sustainable waste management, and effective agricultural practices. This review
has uncovered significant findings.
Moreover, plastic pots used in horticultural nurseries generate substantial waste,
causing environmental pollution. This study aimed to develop biodegradable
composites from banana pseudo-stem reinforced with agricultural residues like
pineapple leaves, taro and water hyacinth as eco-friendly substitutes. The aim of
this study is to develop optimised banana biocomposite formulations with
suitable reinforcements that balance mechanical durability, biodegradation, and
seedling growth promotion properties to serve as viable eco-friendly
alternatives to plastic seedling pots (Anirudh, M. et al. 2024)
Additionaly, the accumulation of agricultural waste continues to be a
significant issue in the world today; thus, extensive studies are being
conducted for the applications of these wastes. Agricultural wastes contain
certain biopolymers suitable for bioplastic production. This study was
conducted to determine the effect of varying ratios of apple pomace to banana
peel on the tensile strength and biodegradability properties of biodegradable
plant pots (Aventurado, J. et al. 2022)
Finally, in the printing industry, as in all other industries, efficient use of
resources, sustainable production and economics are among the most important
issues. The increasing use and purpose of printed products, the increasing
consumer demands and the development of technology also increase the
demand for paper products. Paper and cardboard materials in line with the
increasing consumer demand to give better printing characteristics are
implemented in a number of operations. These processes are sizing, coating, and
calendering.
The recycling and re-use of paper and cartons that have been treated on the
surface may also differ from those that have not been treated on the surface. For
this purpose, test prints were made on paper coated with cationic starch and
PVOH binders and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) pigment before and
after recycling with Inkjet printing system, which is widely used today. The
effect of both recycling and binder type on the quality of the resulting prints has
been studied (Ozcan, A., et al. 2020)
