EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Department of English, Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh organized One-Day International Webinar on “Con-
ceptualizing Contemporaneity of Gandhi” on 25th August 2020 in collaboration with Gandhi-King Global Initiative, Stanford Univer-
sity Centre, USA & Gandhi-King Foundation, Hyderabad, India. The Chief Patron of the webinar was Prof. Saket Kushwaha, the Ho-
nourable Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University and the Patrons were Prof. Amitava Mitra, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, RGU, Prof.
Tomo Riba, the Registrar, RGU and Shri Prasad Gollannapalli, Managing Trustee, Gandhi-King Foundation, Hyderabad, India, re-
spectively. The webinar aimed at discussing contemporaneity of Mahatma Gandhi. In this international webinar peace activists, Gand-
hi enthusiasts, scholars and teachers from different colleges and universities and common people with no institutional affiliation across
India and abroad participated in a greater number. The webinar discussed different trajectories of Gandhian philosophy and socio-
cultural engineering of the colonial and postcolonial India and their cogency and effectiveness in today‟s socio-cultural and economic
climate. Out of1656 registrations both from India and abroad, around 750 participants participated in the webinar on Zoom and Face-
book platforms. The international participants were primarily from Srilanka, Japan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Canada, USA, Germany, etc.
The speakers were from different prestigious universities in India and abroad. They were Prof. Paul Bueno De Mesquita Director,
Centre for Non-violence and Peace Studies University of Rhodes Island, Kingston, Prof. Clayborne Carson, Director, Martin Luther
King Jr. Education and Research Institute, Stanford Institute, Palo Alto, CA, USA, Prof. Isao Takagi, Soka University, Japan, David
Kirshbaum, Nonviolence International Representative to the United Nations, New York and Prof. Naresh Kumar Sharma, University
of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, India. They spoke and interacted with participants on different areas of Gandhian philosophy, ethics and
social activism. They emphasized on the relevance of Gandhian thinking in 21st century and its global outreach. In the e-inaugural
Prof. Paul Bueno De Mesquita Director, Centre for Non-violence and Peace Studies University of Rhodes Island, Kingston was the
keynote speaker who spoke extensively on the global importance of Gandhi. Prof. Saket Kushwaha, the Honourable Vice Chancellor,

 RGU chaired the e-inaugural (08-09 am IST) session and concluded the session by presenting his perspective on Gandhi in today‟s
world. And subsequently, the webinar was conducted in two sessions – morning (09-11am IST) and evening (06-08 pm IST) sessions.
The morning session after the e-inaugural was moderated by Shri. Prasad and in that session Prof. Clayborne Carson, Prof. Isao Ta-
kagi, David Kirshbaum, and Prof. Naresh Kumar Sharma shared their scholarship on Gandhi with an exclusive focus on contemporary
relevance of Gandhi. Prof. Amitava Mitra, the Honourable Pro Vice Chancellor, RGU was the Chief Guest for the evening session. It
was moderated by Shri Prasad and David Kirshbaum was the learned speaker. The latter spoke on different modalities through which
violence operates and intervention of peace as the therapeutic to resist violence in order to restore order in the society. In his under-
standing Gandhi provided that necessary intervention of peace to put violence in abeyance in order to restore societal harmony. Each
participant was given a certificate of participation. For the said e-event Dr. K C Mishra, HoD, Department of English, RGU was the
coordinator and Dr. C K Panda and Dr. P N Piraji were the convener and co-convener respectively.

PART 1: PREFACE

1.1: About the University:

Rajiv Gandhi University (formerly Arunachal University) is the premier institution for higher education in the state of Arunachal Pra-
desh, India. Since its establishment on 4th February, 1984 in the posh campus on the top of Rono Hills at Doimukh, it has been striving
to achieve excellence in the field of education. The University currently holds the second position in all India Central University rank-
ing as evaluated by the Union Ministry of Education.
Its Centre for Bio-diversity has got the distinction of having the potential for excellence.
The University offers under graduate, post graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D programmes with different professional courses for training and
certificate programmes. Many faculty members, researchers and eminent speakers of the country and abroad visit this University for re-
search, delivering lectures and other academic works. The University is 25 Km away from the state capital city Itanagar and located
atop the Rono Hills on a picturesque tableland of 302 acres.

The Department of English was established in July, 1990 and since then it has been imparting teaching and research at M.A., M.Phil.
and Ph.D programme levels in British Literature, World literatures in Translation, ELT and Literary Criticism. Many eminent speakers
visit the Department to deliver their lectures at different times of the year during seminars, conferences and special or series lectures.
Many students after the completion of their study have been able to secure employment in Government and Private sectors.

1.4: Background: About the Issue:

Modern Indian imagination has been largely shaped by M K Gandhi. The socio-political, economic, ethical and aesthetic engineer-
ing of modern India have undergone massive revamping under Gandhi. The revolutionary rethinking that he instituted in order to
carve an image of strong nationhood emphasizing the essential oneness of people striding all barriers artificial and archaic along the
line of perennial geographical and historical identity continues to sustain its guiding presence. The percolation of Gandhian thinking
and ethos into the socio-political and aesthetic spheres of India both during the colonial and post colonial periods of Indian history
seem to have invigorated the spirit of India. The spirit of Indianness against the colonial trickeries of balkanisation of India finding
or manufacturing every possible faultline both imaginary and actual was overwhelmingly inspired by Gandhi in order to uproot a
system which seemed to have had deep anchorage in Indian history. Conflicts exist. Conflicts are motors of history. But Gandhi and
his syncretic system of thinking continue to be the therapeutics to conflict resolution. Therefore, anachronism does not seem to
touch Gandhi. Gandhi as a system of thinking constantly fuels and refuels Indian history and imagination. The purpose of this inter-
national webinar is to investigate how the modern Indian consciousness has been configured and reconfigured by the Gandhian eco-
system and his contemporary importance in the socio-political and aesthetic thinking of India.

2.1 INAUGURAL SESSION:
E-Inaugural Ceremony

Day I (25/08/2020)

An online seminar was held today by Rajiv Gandhi University, Doimukh on the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in today‟s world, titled
“Conceptualizing Contemporaneity of Gandhi” by the university‟s Department of English. Presided over by the honourable Vice
Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha, the „webinar‟ commenced at 8 am and was completely held online in compliance with the Gov-
ernment‟s order on social distancing in educational institutes. This programme – a brain-child of Dr. Chandan Kumar Panda – was at-
tended by speakers and participants from across the world.

The event started with Dr. P.N Piraji from the Department of English, RGU, welcoming the speakers and participants, which was fol-
lowed by a soulful rendition of Mahatma Gandhi‟s favourite bhajan, ‘Vaishnava Jana toh..’ . The day‟s proceedings were set in mo-
tion by Dr. K.C Mishra, Head of the Department of English and coordinator for the event. Thereafter, Dr.C.K Panda, Convener, elabo-
rated for the participants, the objectives of the webinar in lucid terms. He spoke at length about the centrality of Gandhian principles in
realizing the socio-political and economic goals of India in the 21st century. He referred to the renewed impetus being laid upon the
philosophy of „self-reliance‟ as the way forward for the country and how Gandhian philosophy can be considered to be the cornerstone

 of such a progressive vision. He also spoke about the invigorating potential of Gandhian ethical system and his syncretic vision that
can prove instrumental in bridging the ever increasing social fissures. Dr. Panda‟s observations were followed by Dr. GVVSDS Pra-
sad, managing trustee at the Gandhi King Foundation, who spoke briefly about the need to create the ecology of peace and how it is an
existential necessity, particularly during these trying times. He pointed out for the audience how Gandhian principles need continuous
revisitation by everyone to address the challenges of living in an exploitative society. Thereafter, Prof.Paul Bueno De Mesquita, Di-
rector, Centre for Non-Violence and Peace Studies, The University of Rhodes Island, Kingston, in his keynote address, attempted to
deal at length about the expanse of Gandhian worldview and how it transcended the national boundaries and influenced social and po-
litical leaders in the world arena. He particularly spoke about the Gandhi- Martin Luther King (Junior)‟s ideological proximity. His
lecture moved around this axis primarily and in the process endeavored to draw the evolutionary trajectory of the Gandhian principles
and the influence it had on King‟s ideologies and actions. He succinctly brought out the larger vision that drove these two leaders who
transformed the lives of millions across the globe. Apart from speaking about the political and cultural specificity of their actions,
Prof. Mesquita also highlighted the evolutionary curve of their cosmic vision about human civilization. He spoke about the American
thinkers who affected Gandhian belief system and particularly mentioned Adin Ballou in this context. He ended his lecture affirming
the fact that human beings are essentially programmed to be humane and kind and Gandhian ideologies tap into this essential good-
ness. Linking the challenges of the raging pandemic at present and its associated threats of disrupting the social structure, Prof. Mes-
quita argued that Gandhian ideals, premised on „Sarvodaya‟ can alone upset this downward civilizational spiral.

The session was then addressed by the Honourable Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University, who told the audience about the ne-
cessity to recognize peace as the central principle of life and how the practice of Gandhian philosophy can alone sustain a holistic and
conducive social order which can benefit all the stake holders. He argued that Gandhi will continue to be relevant, because Gandhian
principles affirm life.

2.2. TECHNICAL SESSIONS:

Technical Session 1
(9.00 am to 11.00 am)

Resource Person: - Prof. Clayborne Carson

Prof. Carson began his talk with the question as „where do we go from here?‟ since now we have come to this phase where we
have already confronted two great battles i.e. battles against colonialism and imperialism. Still the visions and dreams of King and
Gandhi are yet to be realized. He said that there‟s a long way to realize those visions. Every nation is built on the base of principles of
human rights but now there are people who violate the very base of their nation. Prof. Carson then raised concern saying that what
would King and Gandhi say now if they were to see the present scenario of the world? Have we really achieved the visions of theirs‟?
To this, Professor said that the only reliable are the people; only they can help protect the human rights. We must realize the faults in
ourselves and should begin to build the nations on the principles of human rights in real sense. Further, he was of the opinion that the
use of technology should be implemented more in order to globalize people around and to mobilize ourselves. Professor also referred
black minister James L who had great influence on Indian activists. He then concluded his talk with a suggestion that young people
should understand the real visions of King and Gandhi and should inculcate their ideals for better tomorrow in favor of human rights.
He remarked that „it is a beginning of a long dialogue‟.

Topic: Gandhi‟s Spiritual Philosophy and Soka Philosophy and Peace Movement

The task of teaching values has become more complex in the twenty-first century due to the increasing contextual use of values
which may be politicised or depoliticised. Adding to the fact that a sense of isolation and fragmentation introduced in all areas of life
and society, individual human being has been forced into a state of isolation. There can thus be no denying of the relevance or the
need for revival of the philosophies of Makiguchi, founder of Soka Gakkai and Gandhi. They had a similar understanding of „truth‟ as
the law of the universe which in turn influenced their respective values – the system of creation of value or Soka philosophy and the

 creative use of the value of ahimsa or non-violence. Prof. Isao Takagi beautifully drew a connection between Gandhi‟s spiritual phi-
losophy and Soka philosophy and how they create a path for peace movement.

Tracing the similarity between the two philosophies, he drew on four of Gandhi‟s spiritual legacy namely Optimism (his abso-
lute trust in humanity), Gradualist Activism (Non violence as a plant of slow growth), Paternal Populism (extraordinary communica-
tion with mass of ordinary people) and Holistic Vision (approach to life aspired to integration and harmony). Likewise, he showed
how Soka philosophy believed that the purpose of life is the creation of value i.e. the capacity to find meaning, to enhance one‟s own
existence and to contribute to well being of others extending beyond nation state to new horizons of human community.

Both the philosophies intend towards a „global citizenship‟ that would embody the three essential elements – the wisdom to
perceive the interconnectedness of all life and living, the courage not to fear or deny differences and the compassion to maintain an
imaginative empathy beyond one‟s immediate surroundings – the elements that identifies a bodhisattva in Buddhist teachings. Prof.
Takagi believes that bodhisattva ideals could transform our world by recognizing the innate goodness of human nature, influencing
our view on world and society through interdependence and interconnectedness to create a better and qualified global community of
creative coexistence and sustainability.

Resource Person: Prof. Naresh Kumar Sharma, University of Hyderabad

Prof. Naresh Kumar Sharma from the University of Hyderabad, while delivering his speech, talked about the economic pers-
pective of the Gandhian principle. Throwing some light on the difficulties that our economy has been going through for last few
years, he drew the listerners‟ attention to economic problems, growing inequality in institutions like the universities, ecological con-
cerns, and responsible consumer behaviour and so on. Short term narrowly defined gains have created so much of nuisance that the
economic system itself has become an obsolete one. He drew in three particular aspects of Gandhian perspective. They are, forced lo-
calisation or Swadeshi should be the basis of society i.e. something that the present society needs to look back, focus on the people‟s
knowledge and socially and ecologically responsible economy i.e. also the village-based economy.

Villages can both be the preserver and the contributor to a strong economy. If villages are taken as a basic unit of the democra-
cy, it deserves equal representation and that is why the people require proper knowledge. Success and prosperity must not be taken as
desperation. Hunger for resources causes degradation in nature and threat to flora and fauna. Therefore, localisation must not be for

 name‟s sake, rather it emphasises on what we have realised in terms of resources and balanced human well-being. According to
Gandhi, participation of the villages must be ensured.

In this context, Prof. Sharma talked about the 1945 debate between Nehru and Gandhi. In his views, Nehru was sceptical in
thinking if villages could be the building blocks of the society keeping in view the virtues of modern civilization. He was of opinion
that villages have all the deficiencies and ignorance. How would the new Indian society of our imagination be organised in this man-
ner? In response to his scepticism, Gandhi replied that simplicity resides in villages. If attention is not paid to it, we are doomed. In
villages, people are not in a hierarchical structure, but they support each other. Thus, hoping that the villages won‟t easily be swayed
with the wind of urbanisation and technology, Prof. Sharma ended his talk.

Technical Session 2

(6.00 am to 8.00 am)

The evening session of this one day webinar commenced in a similar serene tone as did the first, with a rendition of a „bhajan‟
that was one of Mahatma Gandhi‟s favourites, called ‘Raghupati Raghav’. Prof. B. Nayak of the Dept. of English, RGU welcomed all
the guest speakers and participants and thanked the Hon‟ble VC and Pro VC of the university, for their constant support and encour-
agement. The honourable Pro Vice Chancellor. Prof. Amitava Mitra then proceeded off the evening‟s lectures with one of the most
unique aspects of Gandhi and his teachings, which is often overlooked – his economic ideals. Prof. Mitra explained that although
Gandhi was never a professional economist, he advocated several important policies for the Indian economy which were later incorpo-
rated into the constitution. Raising the material wealth as well as the cultural wealth of the masses was one of Gandhi‟s dearest de-
sires. According to him, Gandhi wanted to empower the agricultural sector and the rural sector long before it was actually done by the
later governments of free India. He also said that Gandhi, being a man of the villages himself, wanted all the 5.5 lakhs villages across
India to be „Aatma Nirbhan‟ or self reliant and his „Khadi‟ movement is a good example of this desire. For Gandhi, Prof. Mitra said,
there was an acute need for the equalisation of resources, which is why he said that we need to meet the “need of the people, not their
greed” – the results of the cumulative ignorance of which can be seen in the environmental problems of today. The Prof. Mitra ended
by congratulating the dept. for successfully completing not one but two international seminars on similar topics in the last 20 days.

Resource Person: - Mr. David Kirshbaum, representative of Non Violence International in the UN

Mr. David Kirshbaum, representative of Non Violence International in the UN spoke next. He began by asking two fundamen-
tal questions that the world struggles with today – „How do we create peace that lasts?‟ and „Why so much violence around the

 world?‟ He continued by reflecting on the fundamental aspects of violence, peacemaking and peace building and discussed the works
of Johan Galtung, a retired professor in the University of Oslo, Norway, whose ideas also resonate with the teachings and principles of
Gandhi. Mr. Kirshbaum then went on to give an in-depth explanation of Gatlung‟s theories of peace and conflict, in which he states
that violence was of three kinds, namely, personal violence, structural violence and cultural violence. These three areas of violence
propagate two kinds of peace which are negative peace and positive peace. Negative peace promotes peace-making and prevents vi-
olence while positive peace promotes peace building and transformation of individuals and society. According to him, Gatlung be-
lieves that „conflict‟ is inherent in nature and reality, and there is not much that humans can do about it. This theory of Galtung finds a
remarkable parallel with Gandhi‟s ideologies required to create a lasting peace, for Gandhi too was interested in positive peace, or the
type of peace that can bring about a transformation in the society. Mr. Kirshbaum further discussed the four principles of Gandhi,
which are „Satyagraha‟ (the pursuit of Truth), „Ahimsa‟ (non-violent approach in all actions and all interactions), Swaraj (self-rule)
and Sarvodaya (progress of all or universal upliftment). Gandhi‟s principles and Gatlung‟s ideas have been incorporated into the UN‟s
framework of cultural peace that upholds the values of Truth, Non-Violence, Self-reliance. The lecture was brought to an end by a Q
& A round in which several questions were answered by Mr. Kirshbaum and the moderator Shri Prasad Gollanapalli, which included
enquiries on topics like positive violence, Ahimsa, Culture of peace, internal colonization and yoga.

3.1- Academic Context:

The critical exercise on Gandhi and his philosophy is extremely important from the academic point of view. In the Humanities
and the Social Sciences Gandhian ethics, epistemology and logic play a pivotal role in understanding modern Indian history. The In-
ternational Webinar on “Contextualizing Contemporaneity of Gandhi” revisits Gandhi and reinvents the importance of Gandhi in the
contemporary academic climate. It tries to reinvigorate the academic understanding of Gandhi as a crucial historical phenomenon. The
historicity of Gandhi in the academic parlance needs revision. The webinar recognizes the vigor and effectiveness Gandhi even today
in resolving much of our contemporary socio-cultural-political and economic issues. Gandhian ethics, epistemology and logic were
not just historically urgent to address the issues of colonialism. They are equally relevant today. Since Gandhi is a key constituent of
study and research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, webinar foregrounds the importance of contemporanizing Gandhi. It may
help the academicians to introduce different courses on peace, non-violence, social cohesion, sustainable ecosystem etc. In academic
environment Gandhi needs not be just a phenomenon historically important, the contemporaneity aspect of Gandhi needs to be looked
into.

3.2 – RESEARCH CONTXT

The International Webinar on “Contextualizing Contemporaneity of Gandhi” revitalizes the nature of research on Mahatma
Gandhi in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It emphasizes on contemporanizing Mahatma Gandhi in doing research on Gandhi.
The research on Gandhi as potential area of contemporary conflict resolution and global peace and sustainable and cohesive human-
nature ecosystem needs to be undertaken.
3.3- POLICY IMPLICATIONS

 In the higher education policy formation towards socially sensitive and community cohesive research, webinars of this kind are
extremely beneficial. These webinars if undertaken across India would help the policy makers to promote the ideas of social cohesion,
gender sensitivity, humanitarianism and the need for amity and cooperation towards a syncretic nation building and cohesive national-
ism. This Webinar on Gandhi may help the policy makers to rethink on the importance of Gandhi by introducing institutes of peace
studies, centres for non-violence etc.
