Title:

Production of Bioplastic from Banana Peel and Cornstarch as an Eco-

Friendly Alternative to Traditional Plastic

Abstract:

This study investigates the production of bioplastics using banana peels and
cornstarch as eco-friendly alternatives to petroleum-based plastic. The process
involved extracting starch from banana peels and comparing it with cornstarch to
produce bioplastic films. The final products were tested for flexibility, water
resistance, and biodegradability. Results showed that both sources could yield
biodegradable plastic, but cornstarch produced a smoother and more flexible film.
This project suggests that household waste such as banana peels can be
repurposed into sustainable materials, contributing to waste reduction and
environmental protection.

Introduction:

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues today.

Conventional plastic is non-biodegradable and relies on fossil fuels, which
contributes to climate change and land/ocean pollution. Bioplastics made from
natural and renewable sources such as starch offer a promising alternative. This
research explores the potential of banana peel starch and cornstarch in bioplastic
production, comparing their properties and effectiveness.

Statement of the Problem:

Can banana peel starch and cornstarch be used to produce bioplastics, and how do
their physical and biodegradable properties compare?

Objectives:

1. To extract starch from banana peels and compare it with commercially

available cornstarch.

2. To produce bioplastic films using both materials.

3. To compare the physical properties (flexibility, texture, water resistance) of

the produced bioplastics.

4. To evaluate the biodegradability of each sample.

Hypothesis:

If bioplastics are made from banana peel and cornstarch, then the cornstarch-based
plastic will be more flexible and uniform, but both will show biodegradability.

Materials and Methods:

Materials:

 Ripe banana peels

 Commercial cornstarch

 Vinegar

 Glycerin

 Distilled water

 Blender

 Saucepan

 Stove or hot plate

 Molds or trays

 Measuring tools

Procedure:

Banana Peel Bioplastic:

1. Wash and chop banana peels.

2. Blend with water until smooth.

3. Filter to extract starch-rich pulp.

4. Combine 100 mL banana pulp with 10 mL vinegar, 5 mL glycerin, and 100 mL

water.

5. Heat mixture while stirring until it thickens.

6. Pour into molds and let dry for 2-3 days.

Cornstarch Bioplastic:

1. Mix 20g cornstarch with 10 mL vinegar, 5 mL glycerin, and 100 mL water.

2. Heat while stirring until thick.

3. Pour into molds and dry.
