Section 2.
The line graph below gives information about the rates of unemployment between
1991 and 2005 in three different countries in Europe. The table shows the percentage of men
and woman in the workforce in these three countries. Summarise the information by selecting
and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150
words.
Men Women
Germany 76.5% 54.4%
Spain 66.2% 32.3%
Italy 77.1% 37.8%
The line graph presents observed trends in unemployment rates across three European nations over 15
years, while the accompanying table compares the proportions of male and female participation in the
workforce. Overall, Spain recorded the highest unemployment rates before 2003, though it was
eventually surpassed by Italy. In addition, male employment rates were consistently higher than those
of females across all three nations. Spain’s unemployment rate increased steadily from 13% to 18% by
1995 before dropping to only 9% by the end of the surveyed period. Similarly, Germany’s rate
experienced a stable upward trajectory before returning to its starting point at 8%. In contrast, after
fluctuating between 4% and 8%, the figures for Italy rose gradually to 11% by 2005. Moving to the table,
male employment rates were highest in Italy (77.1%), narrowly exceeding Germany. Conversely, female
employment was strongest in Germany, followed closely by Italy. Notably, Spain’s rates remained
weakest in both gender groups.
