The lesson plan for Science 4 at St. Agnes Academy focuses on the chemical properties of matter through experiments and activities over two days. Students will identify and analyze chemical properties, conduct experiments to observe reactions to oxygen, and engage in discussions about the importance of these properties in daily life. The plan includes various teaching methods such as group work, video analysis, and hands-on activities to enhance understanding.

LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 4

School Year 2023-2024

Content Standard: The students demonstrate understanding of the Chemical Properties of Matter through
an actual experiment.
Performance Standard: Conduct an experiment to determine the chemical properties of objects.
Date: October 23-24, 2023 (Monday and Tuesday)
COMMENTS Time Frame: 2 days

I. Objectives
During the 50-minute period, the students are expected to:
a. identify the chemical properties of matter;
b. determine other materials that show different chemical properties of matter;
c. cite the importance of the properties and uses of matter in our daily life;
d. complete the experiment sheet to determine which materials react to oxygen; and
e. analyze the video to determine how materials can easily burn, damage living
organisms
or decompose.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic : Matter and Its Properties – Chemical Properties
b. Reference : You and the Natural World page 22; pp. 44-45
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T20omy9_e2M
c. Materials : petri dish, banana, clean nail and spoon, rusted nail and spoon
d. Values : Being cautious and Obedience
e. Concepts : Chemical Properties of Matter are those that manifest because of the
chemical changes it undergoes.
III. Procedure

DAY 1

A. Preparatory Activity
1. Preliminary Activities
a. The class will start with an opening prayer.
b. The science trivia inquirer will present his/her trivia.

2. Motivation
Jumbled Letters
- The students will arrange the letters that will be posted on the board to form the
correct word.

L C H E I M A C
B. Developmental Activity
1. Presentation of the Lesson
Ask:
1. What word did you form?
2. What comes to your mind when you hear the word chemical?
3. What do you think will be our topic for today?

The teacher will present the objectives for the day.

2. Experiment/ Activity
“Oxygen Reaction”
The students will perform an activity in the Science Laboratory and observe how
different materials react to oxygen. The materials will be placed in different
stations
and students are going to hop from one station to the next to record their
observation.
a. Guide Questions - The teacher will first present the guide questions to the
students so that they will have a general idea of what they need to do in their
activity.

1. What did you notice about the color of the banana after removing its peel?
2. What may have caused the change in its color?
3. What did you notice about the spoon and nails on station 2?
4. What happened to these materials after being exposed to oxygen for a
month?
5. What may have caused the formation of rust on these materials?
b. Setting of Standards
1. What are the things you need to keep in mind before doing the activity?
2. What are the things you need to remember when working inside the
laboratory?

c. Processing of the Activity

1. Were you able to finish the activity on time?
2. What did you do to finish it on time?
3. On a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest, how will you describe your
performance today?
4. What can you do to improve your work next time we have an experiment?

3. Discussion/ Analysis
Presentation of Output
Each group will be given 2-3 minutes to present their work in front.

Ask:
Were all your findings/ observations the same or different?
Why do you think materials change its color when exposed to air?
How does knowing about the properties of materials help us in dealing with the
things
around us?

Materials have different chemical properties and it’s not only limited to oxidation.
Tomorrow, let’s continue to learn about the different chemical properties of matter.

C. Closure Activity
Clear or Cloudy
The students will show thumbs up if they fully understand the lesson today and will
raise their hand to ask questions about things that are still confusing for them.

DAY 2

A. Preparatory Activity
1. Preliminary Activities
a. The class will start with an opening prayer.
b. The science trivia inquirer will present his/her trivia.

2. Motivation
Charades – The students will guess the words that will be acted out in front.

Flammable Oxidation
Toxic Decompose

B. Developmental Activity
1. Presentation
Ask: What word were you able to guess?
How do you think these words are related to our topic for today?

The teacher will present the objectives for the day.

2. Experiment/ Activity
A. Book Track – The students will read the lesson about chemical properties
on page 22 of their Science Book.

B. Video Analysis - The students will watch a short video about the different
chemical properties of matter for additional information.
C. Think-Pair-Share – After reading and watching the video. The students will
be working in pairs and answer the guide questions in their notebook.

Guide Questions:
1. What is flammability, oxidation, toxicity, and decomposition?
2. Which materials have these properties?
3. Why is it important to know about the chemical properties of materials
around us?
Setting of Standards:
1. What are the things you need to keep in mind before reading your book
and
watching a video?

1. Discussion/Analysis
a. Presentation of Output
The teacher will ask 3-5 pairs of students to present their answers to the
class.

b. Processing:
1. Were you able to finish the activity on time?
2. What did you do to finish it on time?
4. What can you do to improve your work next time we have an experiment?

c. The teacher will also present other materials that show the different chemical
properties of matter.

3. Generalization
1. What are different chemical properties of matter?
2. What are the indicators of chemical change happening on a material?
3. What causes an object to form rust?
4. How does decomposition of materials help our environment?
4. Valuing/Deepening
 Why do we need to observe caution when handling materials that show
chemical change?

5. Application
Inquiry Approach
How will you apply your knowledge about decomposition when handling
biodegradable materials?

6. Evaluation
The students will answer the activity on pages 44-45 of their Science Book.

7. Assignment
Bring the following on Thursday:
Group 1 – canned sardines Group 3 – 1 cake slice (in a plastic pack)
Group 2 – alcohol spray Group 4 - cologne/ perfume
Group 5 – 1 liquid detergent
(in a plastic pack)
IV. Closure Activity
Red Light, Green Light
Before the class ends, the students will choose from the statements below.
Red - Stop (I’m totally confused with _______.)
Green - Go (I learned about ________. )
