BACKGROUND AND NEED OF THE STUDY
The social media today has become a part of everyday life and as a
matter of fact, there is hardly anyone today who has not subscribed to at
least one of the social media platforms. Especially found amongst young
people, the social media has evolved into an integral part of the normal
'social life' and now poses as the center of attraction of most people. The
social media has captured the attention of various categories of people
including students who use it in a variety of ways. According to Husain and
Sani (2022), social media is becoming popular today, and people are more
used to exposing and sharing their moments in everyday life. Social media
has become a necessity for the general public. Almost all of the online
activities that we require are covered by social media. Information,
knowledge, and even human livelihoods are all derived through social media.
Platforms on social media are increasingly starting to provide online
commerce, jobs, and access to education etc. Social media allows us to
communicate and buiki social relationships with the public. The freedom to
communicate and share information with everyone in the world, or with a
large number of people at once, is the strength of social media. Today's
social media uploads a lot of content that contains knowledge, information,
or news that can improve our knowledge, not just as entertainment. Many
social media platforms are dedicated to providing information and
knowledge to users. The most popular social media network is TikTok that
provides a short video that is used to provide users with information,
advertise products, and so on.
TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps among students
today. Many Grade 9 Mapagbigay Learners use TikTok every day to watch or
create short videos. While TikTok is fun and entertaining, some people are
worried that it might be affecting students’ studies. However, some students
find educational value in TikTok, using it to relieve stress or learn new study
techniques, though the negative effects often outweigh the positives when
usage is not moderated. This study focuses on examining how TikTok usage
specifically impacts the academic performance and study habits of Grade 9
Mapagbigay learners, aiming to provide insights for students, teachers, and
parents on balancing social media with academic responsibilities.
Students may spend too much time on TikTok, which can lead to less
time for studying, doing homework, or resting. This might lower their grades
and affect their performance in school. However, there are also some
educational videos on TikTok that can help students learn in a fun
[Link] of these different opinions, this study wants to find out how
TikTok really affects the academic performance of Grade 9 Mapagbigay. The
results of this study will help teachers, parents, and students understand the
good and bad effects of using TikTok In recent years, social media has
significantly influenced the daily lives of students, particularly with the rapid
rise of TikTok a short for videosharing platform that has gained immense
popularity among teenagers. Designed for entertainment, creativity, and
social interaction, TikTok has become a dominant force in shaping youth
behavior, time management, and even educational [Link]
media use and academic succes TikTok's popularity has surged dramatically,
particularly.
These students engage daily with various social media and
applications on their smartphones (Zahra et al. 2022). The widespread
adoption of smartphones, coupled with TikTok's strategic focus on creating a
platform that connects people through short- form video content and
encourage user engagement, has significantly contributed to the platform's
explosive growth. In the United States alone, TikTok boasts over 5 million
daily active users (Zahra et al. 2022).
TikTok's influence has expanded beyond entertainment, with an
increasing number of students using it for educational purposes. Content
creators are now crafting educational videos that concisely explain complex
academic concepts, targeting younger viewers (Lee & Abidin, 2023). This
trend has caught the attention of universities due to its educational potential
and ability to connect with students. For instance, Warick's (2020) TikTok to
connect with students in a tangible way because they know it works well as a
recruitment [Link], it's crucial to acknowledge TikTok's current
challenges. As Martin (2024) reports, the platform faces significant scrutiny
over data privacy concerns, the spread of misinformation, and algorithmic
bias, leading to increased pressure and negative [Link] these
issues, TikTok remains widely used, with over 1.5 billion daily users (Warack,
3 2020), making it a relevant platform for studying its impact on students'
academic lives. While these controversies raise important questions about
TikTok's role in society, they also underscore the need to understand how
students perceive its effects on their academic performance. As TikTok,
continues to evolve, it has become a key player in the social media
ecosystem, influencing user behavior, content creation trends, and
information dissemination. However, its rise has not been without
challenges. Recent years have seen TikTok, face scrutiny over data privacy
concerns, content moderation issues, and its potential impact on youth
(Martin, 2024). Despite these challenges, TikTok, remains a significant force
in social media, making it a relevant and important subject for academic
study, particularly in understanding its effects on university students' lives
and academic performance. Several factors have contributed to TikTok's
impressive growth in the U.S. market, for example the U.S has many internet
service providers, like AT &T, Verizon Fios, Xfinity, and Cox. This
democratization of content creation encourages a diverse range of users to
participate, fostering a vibrant community. TikTok's emphasis on short,
engaging video formats caters to the decreasing attention spans of modern
audiences, making it an appealing choice for users seeking quick
entertainment (Woodward, 2024). Additionally, the platform's integration of
trending challenges, music, and effects keeps the content fresh and
encourages user participation, further driving engagement.
The researchers conducted this study to investigate the effects of
TikTok usage on Grade 9 MapagbigaY learners because TikTok’s popularity
and influence on student behavior are growing, and it’s important to
understand both the potential benefits and its impact on learning. The
research aims to determine if TikTok use enhances or distracting from their
academic success, and how it affects students’ study habits, focus, and
overall well-being. TikTok has become a significant platform for students,
influencing their behavior, learning habits, and social interactions. This study
will also explores how TikTok might contribute to addiction like behaviors. It
examines whether TikTok use negatively affects students involvement in
their school activities, performances and social relationships. The research
considers the potential for social media addiction to negatively impact of
their academic performance. The study aims to contribute to a balanced
approach to social media consumption, ensuring students can effectively
manage their time and optimize their academic outcomes.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
The first theory used by researchers is the Stimulus Organism
Response Theory or S-O-R theory explains how people react to things in their
environment. First, a stimulus like a sound, image, or message trigger
something inside the person the “organism” which includes their thoughts,
feelings, or evaluations these can be conscious or unconscious. That internal
reaction then leads to a response, which could be a behavior like clicking,
shouting, or buying or an emotional reaction. This model is used in
psychology, marketing, and even leadership to understand how outside
influences shape our actions. The key idea is that our responses aren’t
automatic they’re filtered through our own emotions, thoughts, and
experiences before we act. The limitations of S-O-R Theory are too simple
and don’t explain why people react differently. According to this study,
TikTok serves as a stimulus that causes Grade 9 Mapagbigay students to
experience internal reactions like excitement, curiosity, or emotional
reactions. These reactions could result in behaviors like excessive screen
usage or distraction from academic work.
And the Second Theory developed by Albert Bandura, Social Cognitive
Theory (SCT), explains that people learn by watching others, not just through
direct experience. It highlights how behavior, personal factors (like beliefs
and self-efficacy), and the environment all interact and influence each other
—a process called reciprocal determinism. Key ideas include observational
learning (modeling), outcome expectations, self-regulation, and the
importance of social context in shaping behavio According to this idea,
TikTok can become a major source of attention, particularly during hard
academic times or personal struggles, which can have an impact on
concentration, time management, and academic performance. According to
this idea, academic behaviors are influenced by self-regulation, peer
pressure, online content, and observational learning. For instance, a lot of
excitement for content providers may cause a student to lose focus on their
academic goals.
Lastly, the Media System Dependency Theory (MSD) says the more you
rely on media to meet your needs, the more influence media has on you. It
highlights three key relationships: between society and media, media and
audience, and society and audience. People’s dependency on media spikes
during times of uncertainty or crisis, making media even more powerful in
shaping opinions and behaviors. According to this idea, TikTok can become a
major source of attention, particularly during hard academic times or
personal struggles, which can have an impact on concentration, time
management, and academic performance.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
This study investigates the relationship between TikTok usage and
the academic performance of Grade 9 Mapagbigay learners. It's based on the
idea that how students use TikTok can influence their school results. The
framework suggests that the amount of time spent on TikTok, the type of
content they watch, and how often they use the app all play a role in shaping
their academic performance. We will also consider how self-discipline and
motivation affect this relationship. The study aims to understand these
connections, providing insights for educators and students alike. The
Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R), Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and
Media System Dependency (MSD) Theory serve as the foundation for this
investigation and together provide an explanation of how TikTok usage may
affect Grade 9 Mapagbigay students' academic performance.
The Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) Theory explains that
environmental stimuli, such as TikTok content (e.g., videos, sounds, and
trends), serve as causes that affect internal psychological processes in
students. To address this limitation, the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT),
developed by Albert Bandura, is employed. This theory highlights that
learning occurs through observation and social interaction. Additionally, the
Media System Dependency (MSD) Theory suggests that individuals
dependency on media, such as TikTok, increases during periods of stress, or
boredom common among students.
These ideas work together to provide a framework for knowing how
TikTok use and academic achievement are related. The research believes
that TikTok usage, an independent variable, effects academic achievement,
a dependent variable, through internal cognitive and behavioral processes
that are controlled by media dependency and social influences.
After identifying these variables, the framework examines how TikTok
usage potentially affects academic success. Excessive use of TikTok may
lead to distractions, poor time management, and reduced academic focus.
Responsible usage, such as viewing educational materials or applying TikTok
as a tool for school-related activities, might favor learning on the low or even
the positive side. Of other factors that self-discipline, motivation to learn,
parental or teacher guidance does. Having students with a strong discipline
can facilitate a well-balanced use of social media and studies; on the other
hand, students who lack proper time management end up with a decline in
academics.
In this study, the effect of TikTok use on the academic performance of
Grade 9 Mapagbigay learners serves as the independent variable,
representing the various ways students engage with the platform (time
spent, content type, frequency of use). The dependent variable is the
academic performance of Grade 9 Mapagbigay learners, reflecting the
potential impact of TikTok usage on their scholastic outcomes.
In Figure 1 the Independent Variable is the shows the Effects of TikTok
on the Academic Performance of Grade 9 Mapagbigay Learners, while the
Independent Variable is the Academic Performance of Grade 9.
