Lab 3 - Cell Biology

Lab 3 focuses on constructing models of plant and animal cells to understand their structures and functions. Students are required to identify key organelles and create annotated models using inexpensive materials. The lab includes a mark scheme assessing neatness, identification, durability, creative use of materials, and accuracy of the models.

TOPIC: Cell Biology
TITLE: Cell model
INTRODUCTION:
The cell is the basic unit of life. Some organisms, such as bacteria and protozoa, consist of one cell. These are
called uni-cellular organisms. Most plants and animal species are multi-cellular. This means they consist of
many cells that work as a system to keep them alive.
Both plant and animal cells have organelles which enable them to carry out vital functions. Animal cells do not
have rigid cell walls so they may not have a fixed shape. If vacuoles are present in the cells, they are normally
small.
Plant cells are normally larger than animal cells. They have a strong cell wall that encloses the cell and gives it a
fixed shape. Plant cells that are involved in photosynthesis also have organelles called chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts are organelles that contain the chemical chlorophyll.
AIM: To construct models of plant and animal cells.
MATERIALS: List ALL materials used. I urge you to find inexpensive materials to construct your model with.
Feel free to Google great ideas to reinvent a suitable model that consists of materials you can afford or materials
you may already have.
METHOD:
1. Construct a model of a simple animal cell. Annotate model. Basic organelles must be identified- cell
membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, vacuole, cytoplasm.
OR

2. Construct a model of a simple plant cell. Annotate model. Basic organelles must be identified – cell wall, cell
membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, vacuole, cytoplasm
Please indicate group number/names of members on model. You are required to write the method
chosen. Not both.
OBSERVATION:
Place COLORED picture of model here. Please ensure annotations are visible. You will be asked to bring your
model to school.
DISCUSSION:
Identity THREE key structures in the cell and for each structure, describe its main function.
