Title: The Whisper in the Dark
Character: Maya
Setting: Maya is sitting alone in a dark room (a box or corner of the stage) with a flashlight.
She talks directly to the audience.
[Lights dim. Maya sits in a box, holding a flashlight under her chin. She looks nervous, like
she’s trying to be brave.]
MAYA:
Okay... I know no one’s gonna believe me, but I have to say it. I have to get it out.
It started three nights ago. I was in my room—just like this—reading under the blanket. My
parents were asleep. My little brother too.
That’s when I heard it.
A whisper.
It came from inside my closet.
[Pauses, glancing toward an invisible closet.]
I thought maybe it was the wind… or my mind playing tricks. But then it whispered again.
(leans in, lowers voice)
“Maya... I see you.”
I FROZE. I couldn’t even scream. I just stared at the closet. It was dark—so dark—I couldn’t see
anything.
So I did the dumbest thing ever. I said… “Who’s there?”
[Pauses. Nervous laugh.]
Nothing. Silence.
Then the door opened by itself. Just a crack. Just enough for me to see... something move.
I ran. I slept in the hallway. I told my parents but they said it was just a dream.
But last night... it happened again.
Only this time... the whisper was right next to my ear.
(leans forward, whispering)
“Why did you leave me?”
[Sits back quickly. Flashlight shakes a little.]
I don’t know what it wants. I don’t know who—or what—it is. But I swear… tonight, if it comes
back… I’m not gonna run.
If you hear about a girl disappearing from her room... that’s me.
And if you hear whispers in the dark...
[Turns flashlight off suddenly. Blackout.]
...don’t answer.
