Q1:

Q2:
(a) |(3x + 1)/5| = 8
⇒ x = 13 or x = -41/3

(b) |(2x - 7)/3| = 6


⇒ x = 12.5 or x = -5.5

(c) |3x - 2| = x
⇒ x = 0.5 or x = 1

(d) |x + 3| = 2x
⇒ x = 3 (only valid solution)

(a) |(2x - 3)/(x + 4)| = 5
⇒ x = -23/3 or x = -17/7

(b) |(3x - 8)/(x + 2)| = 13

⇒ 2(8 − 3π) + 3(13 − π) = 16 − 6π + 39 − 3π = 55 − 9π

(c) 3|15 − 8e| − 2|9 − 4e|


⇒ 3(15 − 8e) − 2(9 − 4e) = 45 − 24e − 18 + 8e = 27 − 16e

(a) y = x + 3, y = |x² + 2x − 3|
⇒ Solve x + 3 = |x² + 2x − 3| ⇒ x = 0, x = 2

(b) 2y = 6 − x ⇒ y = (6 − x)/2, y = 6 − |x − 3|
⇒ Solve (6 − x)/2 = 6 − |x − 3|

Type 3: Composite Functions
Q1. f(x) = 2x + 3, g(x) = x² − 1
fg(2) = f(g(2)) = f(3) = 2×3 + 3 = 9

Q2. f(x) = x² − 1, g(x) = 2x + 3


gf(5) = g(f(5)) = g(24) = 2×24 + 3 = 51

Q3. f(x) = (x + 2)² − 1


f²(3) = f(f(3)) = f((3 + 2)² − 1) = f(24) = (24 + 2)² − 1 = 675

Q4. f(x) = 1 + √(x − 2), g(x) = 10/x − 1


x = 18 ⇒ f(18) = 1 + √16 = 5 ⇒ g(f(18)) = g(5) = 10/5 − 1 = 1

Q5. f(x) = (x − 1)² + 3, g(x) = (2x + 4)/(x − 5)


x = 7 ⇒ g(7) = (2×7 + 4)/(7 − 5) = 18/2 = 9 ⇒ f(9) = (9 − 1)² + 3 = 64 + 3 = 67
