Periodic classification of Elements Test
* Choose the correct option and write its number for the following questions: [3]
1. According to Mendeleev's periodic [Link] of elements are periodic
function of their ____________.
(A) atomic numbers (B) atomic masses
(C) densities (D) boiling points
Ans. : atomic masses
2. Lithium (Li), _____________ and potassium (K) is Dobereiner's triad.
(A) magnesium (Mg) (B) aluminium (Al)
(C) sodium (Na) (D) calcium (Ca)
Ans. : sodium (Na)
3. In _____________ block of the modern periodic table non-metals are found.
(A) s-block (B) d-block (C) p-block (D) f-block
Ans. : p-block
* Answer the following questions: [1]
4. In Dobereiner's triads Li, Na, K, the atomic masses of lithium and potassium are
6.9 and 39.1 respectively, then what will be the atomic mass of sodium?
Ans. : Atomic mass of sodium =
6.9+39.1
2
= 23 .
* Give scientific reasons: [4]
5. Atomic radius goes an increasing down a group.
Ans. : Atomic radius is the distance between the nucleus of the atom and its
outermost Shell.
i. As we move down in a group ant shell. added.
ii. Therefore, the distance between the outermost electron and the nucleus
increases. As a result of this, the atomic size increases in spite of the increased
nuclear charge.
Hence, atomic radius goes on increasing down a group.
6. Elements belonging to the same group have the same valency.
Ans. : i. The electronic configuration of the outermost shell is same for all the
elements belonging to the same group.
ii. So, the number of valence electrons for all the elements in a group is the same.
Page 1
iii. The valency of an element is determined by the valence electrons.
Hence, elements belonging to the same group have the same valency.
* Answer the following questions: [2]
7. Write the modern periodic law and also give the names of 'blocks' in modern
periodie table.
Ans. : i. Modern periodic law states that "The properties of elements are a periodic
function of their atomic numbers."
ii. The entire periodic table is divided into four blocks:
a. s-block: contains group 1 and 2 elements
b. p-block: contains group 13 to 18 elements
c. d-block: contains group 3 to 12 elements (transition elements)
d. f-block: contains lanthanide and actinide series
* Answer the following questions: [15]
8. Write merits of Mendeleev's periodic table.
Ans. : i. Mendeleev was the first to successfully classify all known elements.
ii. Mendeleev's periodic table helped to revise the atomic masses of some elements
so as to give them proper places in the periodic table in accordance with their
properties.
For example, the atomic mass of beryllium ( Be ) was previously determined to be
14.09 . This value was changed to the correct value of 9.4 and beryllium (Be) was
placed before boron (B).
iii. Mendeleev's periodic table had left some vacant spaces in it. These were for
elements that were yet to be discovered.
Three of these unknown elements were named eka-boron, eka-aluminium and eka-
silicon from the known neighbours and their atomic masses were indicated as
44,68 and 72 , respectively. He predicted properties of these elements even before
they were discovered.
These elements are scandium (Sc) , gallium (Ga) and germanium (Ge) respectively.
The properties of these elements matched well with those predicted by Mendeleev.
iv. There was no place reserved for noble gases in Mendeleev's original periodic
table. But, when noble gases were discovered later, they were placed in a new
group called as 'zero group' in Mendeleev's periodic table without disturbing the
positions of other elements.
9. Write the demerits of Mendeleev's periodic table.
Ans. : Demerits of Mendeleev's periodic table:
i. The whole number atomic mass of the elements cobalt (Co) and nickel (N i) is the
same, that is, 59. Therefore, there was an ambiguity regarding the sequence of
these elements in the Mendeleev's periodic table.
Page 2
ii. Isotopes were discovered long time after Mendeleev developed the periodic
table. Isotopes have same chemical properties but different atomic masses.
Therefore, isotopes could not be given a proper place in Mendeleev's periodic
table.
iii. In Mendeleev's periodic table, elements are arranged in an increasing order of
atomic masses. However, the rise in atomic mass is not uniform. Hence, it was not
possible to predict the number of elements that could be discovered between two
heavy elements.
iv. No fixed position was given to hydrogen in Mendeleev's periodic table because
it resembled alkali metals (group I) as well as halogens (group VII).
10. An element has its electronic configuration as (2,8,2). Answer the following:
i. What is the atomic number of this element?
ii. What is the group of this element?
iii. To which period does this element belong?
Ans. : i. Atornic number of the element is 12 .
ii. The element belongs to group 2.
iii. The element belongs to period 3 .
11. To which group does the halogen family belong? Write any four halogens.
Ans. : The halogen family belongs to group 17 of the periodic table.
Name of any four halogens are as follows: Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine.
12. Select the appropriate option and complete the following paragraph:
(Metals, non-metals, metalloids, four, seven, s-block, p-block, d-block, f-block.)
On the basis of electronic configuration, elements in the modern periodic table
are classified into ___________ blocks. Group 1 and 2 elements are included in
__________ and all these elements are metais. (except hydrogen). Group 13 to 18
elements are included in _________ This block contains metals, non-metals and
metalloids Group 3 to 12 elements are included. in __________ and all the
elements are ___________. Elements shown at the bottom of the periodic table i.e.,
Janthanides and actinides constitute _________ and all these elements are metals.
Ans. : On the basis of electronic configuration, elements in the modern periodic
table are classified into four blocks. Group 1 and 2 elements are included in s-block
and all these elements are metais. (except hydrogen). Group 13 to 18 elements are
included in p-block This block contains metals, non-metals and metalloids Group 3
to 12 elements are included. in d-block and all the elements are Metals . Elements
shown at the bottom of the periodic table i.e., Janthanides and actinides constitute
f-block and all these elements are metals.
* Answer the following questions: [5]
