Tutorial : DC Transient Response of RC Circuits

Q1. An uncharged 5 μF capacitor in series with a 500 Ω resistor is suddenly connected


at time t = 0 to a 100 V dc supply. Evaluate from first principles an expression for
the subsequent current in the circuit as a function of time.

Hence determine (a) the final energy stored in the capacitor at the instant t = 2τ and
(b) the energy dissipated in the resistor during the interval t = 0 to t = 2τ, where τ is
the time constant of the circuit.
[Ans. 0.019 J; 0.0025 J]
