Trolley System Solution

The document outlines the solution to a block and trolley system problem involving a 20 kg trolley and a 3 kg hanging block. It details the forces acting on each mass, derives equations for net forces, and solves for the acceleration of the system and the tension in the string. The final results indicate an acceleration of 0.96 m/s and a tension of 27.13 N.

Solution to Example 4.

9 - Block and Trolley System

Given:

- Mass of trolley on table, m = 20 kg

- Mass of hanging block, m = 3 kg

- Coefficient of kinetic friction, = 0.04

- Acceleration due to gravity, g = 10 m/s

- Assume pulley and string are ideal (massless, frictionless)

Step 1: Forces on Each Mass

For the 20 kg block (m):

- Tension T pulls to the right

- Kinetic friction f resists to the left

- Normal force N = mg = 20 10 = 200 N

- Friction force f = N = 0.04 200 = 8 N

Net force: T - f = ma Equation (1): T - 8 = 20a

For the 3 kg hanging block (m):

- Weight = 30 N, Tension T acts upward

Net force: 30 - T = 3a Equation (2)

Step 2: Solve the Equations

From Equation (1): T = 20a + 8 Equation (3)

Substitute into Equation (2):

30 - (20a + 8) = 3a 22 = 23a a = 22 / 23 0.9565 m/s

Step 3: Find Tension

T = 20a + 8 = 20 (22 / 23) + 8 = 624 / 23 27.13 N

Final Answers:

- Acceleration of the system: a 0.96 m/s

- Tension in the string: T 27.13 N
