Machine Shorthand – is a skill course, the highlight of which is to learn a method of taking dictation
through the use of machine as a writing instrument. This method of taking dictation is used in courts,
legal offices and modern business and government offices.
Paper Tray- is connected to the Stentura by attaching the two hooks on the top of the paper tray to
the ledge (rim, border, boundary) under the platen assembly and then pushing down to snap it in
place.
*Note: Please be sure that the upper tray is pressed down firmly into the lower tray and level.
Failure to do so may cause the Steno-Pad to buckle. (fold, crumple)
The sound of a word in English is written on the keyboard with the use of paper tape. Each
stroke is printed on the paper tape which spaces automatically as the keys are depressed. The
Keyboard is divided into three sections
1. Initial Consonants- The consonant sound that begin words or syllables are written by
depressing one or more keys on the left side of the keyboard. (STPH, KWR)
2. Final Consonants- The consonant sounds that end words or syllable are written by
depressing one or more keys on the right side of the keyboard. (FPLTD, RBGSZ)
3. Vowels - All vowel sounds are written by depressing one or more keys on the bottom of the
keyboard.
Left Hand - The left hand fingers are placed on the keys S, T, P, H at the upper part of the keyboard.
This is the left homekey. The left thumb rests lightly over the vowel keys A and O.
Right Hand – The right hand fingers are placed on the keys F, P, L, T, at the upper part of the
keyboard. This is the right homekey. The right thumb rests lightly over the vowel keys E U.
Initial S. The first letter to be learned in this course is initial S which is written by the left small finger.
With the other fingers on the homekey position, depress initial S with the left small finger several
times. You will see the initial S appears on the far left of the paper tape. Always release the key after
each stroke to allow the machine to space.
Vowel A. The vowel is written by the left thumb. Move the left thumb to the far left of the bottom row
and depress vowel A several times to get a clear print of vowel A in the paper tape.
In Machine Shorthand, the first principle that you will learn is to write only the sound of a word,
like SAY. Write the letters S and A together in one stroke. You will not write letter Y because you do
not hear the sound of Y in the word SAY.
2
Initial T is written by left ring finger on the homekey and initial T appears on the left side of the
paper tape.
To write –T depress the key under the right small finger and –T appears on the right side of
the paper tape. Be sure to check that you are stroking the correct key with your little finger.
Consonant Compounds: ST
Two for more consonants occurring together in a word as ST in the word STAY (ST A) are
called consonant compounds.
STATE- to write STATE, depress consonant compounds ST, vowel A, and –T simultaneously.
To write the word ATE, depress vowel A and –T at the same time.
Vowel U is written by the right thumb at the far right of the vowel keys.
[ ST U ]
Skill Development
Practice the following: sue, suit, ate, say, stew, stay, state, you, sat, ate, state, a , you, stew, suit,
stay
To write the period depress the right homekeys FPLT all together. Repeat period a number of
times until FPLT appear side by side on the right side of the paper tape.
3
You say. You ate. You sat. Say Sue. You state. You stay. Sue ate. Sue sat. You suit Sue. You
say sue. Sue ate stew.
Assignment #1
You just learned the first principle of writing words by sound. All letters not heard are omitted; thus,
say and sue will be written as SA and SU. Write the sound pattern of the following words.
Write -S with the right little finger on the key just below –T key. Reach for –S without removing other
fingers from their homekey position.
Final Z is adjacent to –S. Depress –Z by extending the right little finger sideward.
To write consonant compounds –TS depress the crack between –T and –S by the right small finger.
Phrasing
Phrasing in Machine Shorthand is writing more than one word in one stroke.
Vowel O is controlled by the left thumb and is located on the left side of the vowel keys. This also
represents number zero (0).
To write comma, reach for the letters RBGS located below the right homekeys. These are
controlled by the right fingers.
The asterisk key is located between two index fingers. One asterisks indicates that an error
has been committed. Reach the asterisks key with either index finger and depress once before
writing the correct word. When you read or transcribe your notes, the asterisks (*) warns you to
ignore the word preceding it and to continue reading the notes that follow the asterisk.

Depress Initial R by curving the left index finger and moving it towards the key below at home
position.
Depress final R (-R) by curving the right index finger and moving it towards the key directly below it.
To write TR straighten the left ring fingers and curve the index left finger and reach for letters T and
R. Keep the other fingers close to homekey position. After writing the letters, return the fingers to
homekey position.
In writing –RS depress –R with the right index finger and –S with the small right finger at the same
time. Keep the fingers naturally curved.
Write –RT by curving the right index finger to reach –R and straighten the small right finger to –T and
depress both simultaneously. Keep the other fingers close to homekey position.
