ASSIGNMENT: MATRICES
1. There are 3 families A, B and C. The number of men, women and children in these families are as under:
Men Women Children
Family A 2 3 1
Family B 2 1 3
Family C 4 2 6
Daily expenses of men, women and children are Rs. 200, Rs. 150 and Rs. 200 respectively. Only men and
women earn and children do not. Using matrix multiplication, calculate the daily expenses of each family.
What impact does more children in the family create on the society?
2. Three schools A, B and C want to award their selected students for the values of Honestly, Regularity and
Hard work. Each school decided to award a sum of Rs. 2,500, Rs. 3,100, Rs. 5,100 per student for the
respective values. The number of students to be awarded by the three schools is given below in the table:
School A B C
Values
Honestly 3 4 6
Regularity 4 5 2
Hard work 6 3 4
Find the total money given in awards by the three schools separately, using matrices.
Apart from the above given values, suggest one more value which should be considered for giving awards.
3. Three school X, Y and Z organised a fete(mela) for collecting funds for flood victims in which they sold
hand – held fans, mets and toys made from recycled material, the sale price of each being Rs. 25, Rs. 100
and Rs. 50 respectively. The following table shows the number of articles of each type sold:
School X Y Z
Articles
Hand – held fans 30 40 35
Mats 12 15 20
Toys 70 55 75
Using matrices, find the funds collected by each school by selling the above articles and the total funds
collected. Also, write any one value generated by the above situation.
4. There are 2 families A and B. There are 4 men, 6 women and 2 children in family A, and 2 men, 2 women
and 4 children in family B. The recommended daily amount of calories is 2400 for men, 1900 for women,
1800 for children and 45 grams of proteins for men, 55 grams for women and 33 grams for children.
Represent the above information using matrices. Using matrix multiplication, calculate the total
requirement of calories and proteins for each of the 2 families. What awareness can you create among
people about the balanced diet from this question.

5. In a parliament election, a political party hired a public relations firm to promote its candidates in three
ways – telephone, house calls and letters. Three cost per contact (in paise) in given in matrix A as
140 ℎ
A = 200
150
The number of contacts of each type made in two cities X and Y is given is the matrix B as
ℎ
1000 500 5000
B=
3000 1000 10000
Find the total amount spent by the party in the two cities.
What should one consider before casting his her vote – party’s promotional activity or their social
activities?
6. Two schools A and B decided to award prizes to their students for three values Honesty (x), Punctuality
(y) and Obedience (z). School A decided to award a total of Rs. 15,000 for the three values to 4, 3 and 2
students respectively, while school B decided to award Rs. 19,000 for the three values to 5, 4 and 3
students respectively. If all the three prizes together amount to Rs. 5,000, then
(i) Represent the above situation by a matrix equation and form linear equation using matrix
multiplication.
(ii) Which value you prefer to be rewarded most and why?
7. A firm produces three products A, B and C which it sell in two markets. Annual sales in units are given as
follows:
Market Units Sold
A B C
I 8000 4000 16000
II 7000 18000 9000
If the prices per unit of A, B and C are Rs. 2.50, Rs. 1.25 and Rs/ 1.50 respectively and The cost per unit
are Rs. 1.70, Rs. 1.20 and Re. 0.80 respectively, find the total profit in each market by using matrix algebra.
(Ans.: The profit in Market I is Rs. 17,800 and the profit in Market II is Rs. 12,800.)
8. Three person buy cold drinks of different brands A, B and C. The first person buys 12 bottles of A, 5 bottles
of B and 3 bottles of C. The second person buys 4 bottles of A, 6 bottles of B and 10 bottles of C. The third
person buys 6 bottles of A, bottles of B and 9 bottles of C.
Represent these information in the form of a matrix. If each bottle of brand A costs Rs. 4 each bottle of B
costs Rs. 5 and each bottle of C costs Rs. 6, then using matrix operations, find the total sum of money spent
individually by the three person for the purchase of cold drinks. (Ans.: Rs. 91, Rs. 106, Rs. 113)

9. An amount of Rs. 5,000 is put into three investments at the rates of interest of 6%, 7% and 8% per annum
respectively. The total annual income is Rs. 358. If the combined income from the first two investment is
Rs. 70 more than the income from the third, find the amount of each investment by using matrix algebra.
(Ans.: x = 1000, y = 2200 and z = 1800)
10. Mr. X has invested a part of his investment in 10% bond A and a part in 15% bond B. His interest income
during first year is Rs. 4,000. If he invests 20% more in 10% bond A and 10% more in 15% bond B, his
income during second year increases by Rs. 500. Find his initial investment and the new investment in
bonds A and B using matrix method.
(Ans.: x = 10000, y = 20000. That is, his initial investment are Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000 in bond A
and bond B respectively. Substituting these values in 1.20x and 1.10y, we get his new investments as
Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 22,000. )
