You are provided with the following materials
Solution M: Containing 2M HCl
Material N: 1cm3 length of magnesium ribbon
Distilled water
Stop watch
Measuring cylinder
Glass rod/ Stirring rod.
Procedures
(i) Cut five pieces of 1cm3 of Magnesium ribbon using a ruler
(ii) Measure 10cm3 of solution M using measuring cylinder and pour into 100cm3 beaker
(iii) Drop one piece of material N into the beaker containing 10cm3 of solution M and
immediately start the stop clock.
(iv) Stir gently at first using glass rod to make sure the metal does not stick to the sides of
the beaker.
(v) Stop timing when all the material N has reacted and disappeared. Record the time
(vi) Repeat the above procedures using 8cm3, 6cm3 , 4cm3, 2cm3 of solution M while
topping up with 2cm3, 4cm3 ,6cm3, 8cm3 of distilled water respectively.
