Difference Between Mindful and Mindless Activity
Being present and actively engaged in the present moment with an awareness of thoughts,
feelings, and the surrounding environment without judging is known as mindfulness. Operating
on "autopilot," whereby one's behaviors are automatic and attention is diverted or missing, is
known as mindlessness. Being able to recognize this distinction can dramatically alter the
manner in which we complete daily activities to improve experience as well as result.
Reading a Book
Reading mindfully means one reads the content completely, grasps the context, and ponders the
meaning. One attunes oneself to every word and notion, leading to greater understanding.
Reading mindlessly is reading through pages without really absorbing the information, usually
having to go back and read parts over again.
Mindful cooking involves paying attention to the process—measuring ingredients, monitoring
textures, taste-testing, and appreciating the sensory experience. It encourages creativity and
accuracy. Mindless cooking can result in mistakes, e.g., food burning or leaving out ingredients,
as the cook is distracted or in a hurry.
Going for a Walk
A mindful walk uses all the senses—breathing the air, noticing the environment, and noticing
body movement. It is a meditation. The opposite, a mindless walk, is taking a walk while
daydreaming, looking at a phone, or stressing, diminishing the relaxation and awareness benefits.
In this way, mindfulness applied in everyday activities increases concentration, pleasure, and
mental clarity.
