monk of the Kamakura period (1185–1333), people who aspired to learn Buddhism gathered in
Shioda, shading their faces, and carrying book boxes on their backs. Due to this, the area was
called "Gakkai (Sea of Learning) of Shinshu. The term "sea of learning" comes from a Chinese
concept of comparing the way many rivers flow through China, all heading to the sea, to
good manners of study. The pleasure of soaking in Bessho's hot spring must also have
appealed to the knowledge seekers. It may not have been a coincidence that a rich Buddhist
culture has blossomed around the hot spring village that Shioda is so proud of.
