Life Cycle of a Mosquito
Egg
• Eggs are laid in still water.

Larva (wriggler)
• The larva of a mosquito is called a
wriggler.
• It lives in water. It eats a lot and moults
several times as it grows.
Wriggler
Pupa
• A wriggler changes into a pupa.
• It lives near the water surface.
• It stops feeding and continues
developing in the pupal case.
Adult
• An adult mosquito comes out of the
pupal case when it breaks open.
• It spreads its wings and waits for its
wings to dry before flying off.

Adult
• Adults emerge and fly away looking for their first meal
and to mate.

• Adults eat nectar, like many other insects.

Adult Female
• Only female mosquitoes bite, seeking blood from humans and
other animals. Blood provides pre-natal supplements needed for
egg development.

• After her blood meal, the female lays eggs on or near the water.
The eggs can survive dry conditions for a few months.

• Not all species of mosquitoes require females to eat a blood


meal to make eggs, but those are the mosquitoes you are most
familiar with!
